Exterior Features
Look closely and you'll spot subtle changes to the 2016 Mazda 6. A new grille debuts with available 'signature wing' illumination. A compact roof antenna is also new, along with available LED headlights and a darker finish for the 19-in. aluminum wheels that are included on some trim levels. New paint colors include Sonic Silver and Titanium Flash.
Interior Features
Mazda has revised the
6 Sedan's dashboard and center console, aiming to improve fit-and-finish in the process, and greater sound insulation is claimed to quiet the ride on the highway by 25%.
Revisions to the front and rear seats are said to improve comfort, and Mazda wraps the steering wheel in a new, premium grade of leather. Mazda replaces the optional Almond leather for 2016, introducing a new off-white shade called Parchment. Standard equi
pment now includes a manual seat-height adjuster for the front passenger seat.
Optional Features
The 2016 Mazda 6 Sport and Mazda 6 Touring with the optional automatic transmission come with a new Mazda Connect infotainment system equipped with a freestanding 7-in. display screen. A reversing camera and HD Radio are also standard with Mazda Connect technology.
The Touring version with the optional automatic can be further optioned with a premium surround-sound system, satellite radio, and a power sunroof. A Touring Technology package adds automatic LED headlights, LED running lights, LED signature grille lighting, adaptive front-lighting system, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-dimming interior and driver's side mirrors. This option also installs a universal garage door opener, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, and a Smart City Brake Support system that works autonomously at low vehicle speeds to eliminate collisions, if possible.
For the Mazda 6 Grand Touring, the Technology package contains a radar-based cruise control system with forward-obstruction warning, a Smart Brake Support system that operates at a greater range of vehicle speeds, i-Eloop regenerative engine braking, lane-departure warning system, automatic high-beam headlights, and active grille shutters.
Under the Hood
The same 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that the automaker employed in the 2015 Mazda 6 is standard in the new 2016 6 Sedan. It is paired with a manual gearbox in Sport and Touring trim levels, while an automatic transmission is optional for these versions and standard in the 6 Grand Touring.
All versions of the 2016 Mazda 6 include a standard electrical parking brake and benefit from revised suspension tuning that is adjusted to supply a smoother ride quality. Versions with the automatic transmission gain Drive Selection technology with a Sport driving mo
de, and new i-Stop technology that shuts the engine off when the Mazda 6 is idling in traffic or at intersections.
Safety
For 2016, Mazda groups all of its safety-related vehicle systems under the i-ActiveSense brand. New this year, a rear cross-traffic alert system warns the driver if traffic is approaching from the sides of the vehicle while the car reverses from a blind parking space. New Smart Brake Support technology is an evolution of Smart City Brake Support and works at higher vehicle speeds in addition to lower city speeds.
Technology
A Mazda Connect infotainment system debuts for the 2016 Mazda 6, offered on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. It includes a freestanding 7-in. display sitting atop the dashboard that is operated using remote controls mounted to the center console. The system also makes it easier to access the Internet and social media platforms via a paired smartphone.
