Suburban is the oldest continually offered nameplate of any vehicle sold in the United States, dating back to 1935 when General Motors first introduced an enclosed 3-row passenger vehicle on a half-ton pickup truck frame. For 2015, the Chevy Suburban is completely redesigned, improved in most respects over its predecessor.

Exterior Features

Lighter and more aerodynamic than before, the new Suburban shares styling with the redesigned 2015 Tahoe but not with any Chevy pickup truck. That's a break with tradition; even the previous version of the Suburban overlapped with the now defunct Avalanche pickup. What Chevrolet does emulate from the new Silverado 1500 trucks is the Suburban's new inlaid side door design, which improves airflow and reduces noise inside the cabin, according to the automaker.

Interior Features

Up to 9 people can ride inside the 2015 Suburban, though a front bench seat is offered only for the base LS trim level. Most versions will be equipped with front bucket seats and a center console, which also includes a new front-center air bag designed to protect the people up front from injury as a result of an opposite-side collision.

For 2015, the Suburban adds a little bit of extra leg room in the second row of seats, but it comes at the expense of third-row leg room, which shrinks by nearly half an inch. Maximum cargo volume is reduced, too, regardless of whether the rear rows of seats are in use or folded.

Nevertheless, buyers using a Suburban primarily as a 5-passenger vehicle equipped with a substantial 76.4 cu.-ft. cargo hold will be pleased that the third-row seat no longer requires removal to maximize interior volume. Instead, it folds down to create a flat load floor. Additional upgrades over the previous Suburban include soft-touch interior surfaces and redesigned seats.

Optional Features

Suburban buyers can outfit the new 2015 model with a familiar set of upgrades. Highlights include leather upholstery, Chevrolet MyLink connectivity and infotainment technology, a navigation system, premium sound system, and a rear-seat entertainment system equipped with a Blu-Ray DVD player and dual viewing screens. The new 2015 Suburban is also offered with a power sunroof, power rear liftgate, power-folding third-row seat, individual second-row bucket seats, and a Magnetic Ride Control suspension.

A variety of wheel sizes and designs are also offered for the Suburban, along with several new safety-related systems outlined in greater detail below.

Under the Hood

The 2015 Suburban is equipped with a new 5.3-liter V-8 engine that makes an estimated 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 rpm. The engine is equipped with variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, and an Active Fuel Management system that is designed to improve gas mileage by shutting down half of the engine's cylinders under certain low-load driving conditions.

A new 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability, powertrain grade braking, and a tow/haul driving mode is charged with delivering the engine's power to the Suburban's rear wheels. As an option, this full-size SUV can be fitted with 4-wheel drive (4WD). Tow ratings are improved over the 2014 model, increasing to 8,300 pounds with 2WD and to 8,100 pounds with 4WD.

Chevrolet constructs the new Suburban on a stronger, fully boxed frame, similar to that used beneath its line of full-size pickups. New rust-resistant Duralife brake discs are designed to last twice as long as conventional rotors, electric steering is new, and the Suburban is equipped with an independent front suspension combined with a solid rear axle that employs a new splayed rear shock absorber design intended to improve the SUV's ride and handling. A Magnetic Ride Control suspension is optional for the new Suburban, offered exclusively on the LTZ trim level.

All 2015 Suburbans will be equipped with standard OnStar telematics with 6 months of free service. OnStar includes features such as Automatic Crash Notification, Crisis Assist, Emergency Services, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Family Link monitoring. Chevrolet also says the new Suburban can be optioned with glass breakage, vehicle motion, and interior motion sensors to help reduce thefts and threats.

Additional safety upgrades include a new center-mounted front-seat air bag system designed to protect occupants when a collision occurs on the opposite side of the SUV from where they are sitting. It is included for all Suburbans equipped with front bucket seats and a center console.

A reversing camera, rear cross-traffic alert system, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a lane-departure warning system are also available for the 2015 Suburban, along with an adaptive cruise control system, forward-collision warning system, Lane Change Assist technology, and a Safety Alert Seat design that vibrates in the presence of a detected threat.

Chevrolet offers the latest version of its MyLink connectivity and infotainment technology in the new 2015 Suburban, featuring a color touch-screen display that slides up to reveal a hidden, locking storage compartment. MyLink includes a Bluetooth connection and music streaming capability, hands-free text messaging, and access to popular smartphone applications. The Suburban also offers up to 6 USB ports and an equal number of power outlets, one of which is designed to accept 3-prong plugs and to deliver 110 volts of electricity.
