The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is completely redesigned "from hood to hitch," according to General Motors. The company goes on to call the new 2014 Silverado "the strongest, smartest, most capable Silverado ever." The new 2014 Silverado Crew Cab goes on sale in the second quarter of 2013, with regular- and extended-cab models following later in the year.

Exterior Features

Chevrolet focused on aerodynamics in redesigning the 2014 Silverado, sealing the truck's front end, adding cab-to-box seals, and installing underbody panels to smooth airflow. The side mirrors offer an aerodynamic design, subtle roof and tailgate spoilers reduce aerodynamic drag, and the dual power-dome hood design also functions to lift air over the windshield wiper arms to make the Silverado more aerodynamic.

Rather than use doors that wrap up into the roof, the new Silverado's side doors are "inlaid" to the truck's body, which helps to reduce cabin noise. Characteristic fender flares, long a Chevy truck staple, return for 2014, and the new 2014 Silverado's wheels are wider than before and offered in sizes ranging from 17 to 20 inches in diameter.

The new Chevy Silverado is offered with three different box lengths: 5'8," 6'6," and 8' cargo beds are available. All include a standard locking tailgate, 2-tier loading, and a box light. Loading is also easier for 2014, thanks to a standard CornerStep rear bumper design and handgrips integrated into the box-rail protectors.

Interior Features

Chevrolet says the 2014 Silverado offers an interior that is quieter, more comfortable, and more functional. In addition to exterior aerodynamic enhancements and inlaid door design, the new Silverado features triple door seals to eliminate noise.

Comfort is improved through the use of dual-density foam in the seats, which are upholstered in stain-resistant high-wear cloth or leather. Crew Cab models are configured for easier entry and exit thanks to larger rear side doors, and this model's back seat adds two extra inches of leg room. The Silverado Extended Cab gets new rear side doors that are front-hinged for easier entry and exit.

Functionality is improved through smartly spaced controls that the automaker says can be operated while wearing work gloves. The 2014 Silverado offers numerous storage areas, USB ports, and both 12-volt and 110-volt power outlets. The instrument cluster provides 6 gauges and, on most models, a 4.2-inch color information display.

Optional Features

An 8-inch in-dash color touch screen is optional for the 2014 Silverado, accompanied by features such as a reversing camera, navigation system, and Chevrolet MyLink connectivity. Adjustable tie-down cleats, under-rail LED lighting, an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate, and an integrated trailer-brake controller are also optional, and Chevy dealers will offer a range of 22-inch wheels as extra-cost accessories.

The Silverado Z71 model returns for 2014, offered in conjunction with LT or LTZ trim levels. The Z71 package includes an automatic locking rear differential, off-road suspension tuning with Rancho monotube shocks, transfer-case skid plate, and 18- or 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. The Silverado Z71 is also equipped with hill-descent control, front tow hooks, brushed metal doorsill plates, and unique interior trim.

Additionally, the new Silverado can be upgraded with several new safety features, discussed in greater detail below.

Under the Hood

A range of new engines debuts in the 2014 Silverado, but as this preview is written the truck's final horsepower, torque, towing, payload, and fuel economy figures have not been finalized. Chevrolet says that more data will be available when the new Silverado debuts at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

The standard engine is a new 4.3-liter V-6 that Chevrolet says will offer enough torque "to power a crew cab pickup and tow a substantial trailer." Two V-8 engines are also on the powertrain menu. New 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 engines provide more horsepower, torque, and fuel economy than the current iterations, according to Chevrolet, and the 6.2-liter V-8 is "engineered to be the most capable engine in any light-duty pickup."

All three engines, part of GM's new EcoTec3 engine family, are equipped with direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing, and cylinder-deactivation technology that shuts off half of the engine's cylinders under low-load driving conditions to help conserve fuel.

A 6-speed automatic transmission with new Auto Grade Braking is standard with all three power plants, and the new Silverado is equipped with electric steering, 4-wheel-disc brakes with new DuraLife brake rotors designed to last twice as long as regular brake rotors, and wider wheels and tires designed to reduce sidewall flex and improve both cornering and steering.

The new Silverado's suspension--coil-over-shock in front with leaf springs in the back--is constructed with aluminum upper and lower front control arms, and the shocks are 30% stiffer than before, GM says.

Standard safety features for the new 2014 Chevy Silverado include a full complement of air bags, traction and stability control system with trailer sway control, hill-start assist, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, and OnStar telematics with a limited-time subscription to Automatic Crash Notification service.

Options for this truck include blind-spot side mirrors, reversing camera, and front and rear park-assist sensors. Buyers can also opt for a forward-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system with an Active Safety Seat feature.

The 2014 Silverado will be offered with Chevrolet MyLink technology, which allows the truck's owner to pair up to 10 different devices to the 8-inch color in-dash touch screen to make hands-free phone calls, stream music, and to access mobile applications via the touch screen or by using natural voice-recognition technology.
