Introduction

The first of several new Audi models coming to the United States equipped with a TDI clean diesel V-6 engine, the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI goes on sale early in the spring of 2013 for a starting price of $82,500.

Exterior Features

Offered only as an extended-wheelbase Audi A8 L model, the new turbo-diesel A8 L TDI is equipped with adaptive xenon headlights, LED running lights, LED side lighting, and LED taillights. A set of 19-inch aluminum wheels is standard equipment.

Interior Features

Highlights from the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI's standard equipment list include automatic climate control, leather seats, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, walnut wood inlays, brushed aluminum interior trim, and LED cabin lighting. Additionally, the A8 is equipped with a power sunroof, power trunk, navigation system with Audi Connect services, premium sound system, keyless entry and start, and a reversing camera.

Optional Features

All 2014 Audi A8 models receive modified option packages this year, aligning the model with the automaker's existing Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim lines. For example, the A8 L's new Premium Plus package includes 22-way power front comfort seats with ventilation and massage, LED headlights, Audi Side Assist, and Audi Pre-Sense Rear. More details will become available when the vehicle goes on sale.

Under the Hood

The 2014 Audi A8 L TDI model's 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 generates 240 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque. Audi claims that the car will accelerate to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds while returning 24 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg in combined driving.

The A8 L TDI's standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system splits engine power 40% to the front wheels and 60% to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions, and can vary that split to a greater degree as the situation warrants.

Safety

Among the numerous safety features offered for the 2014 Audi A8, adaptive headlights are standard equipment. The vehicle is also offered with adaptive cruise control, Audi Lane Assist, Audi Side Assist, Audi Pre-Sense Plus, rearview and corner view camera systems, and a Night Vision Assistant with pedestrian detection.

Technology

In addition to the safety-related technology listed above, the Audi A8 is offered with a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system. Audi Connect technology is standard equipment, providing enhanced navigation with Google Earth images, making it easy to find information via Google Local Search, and turning the A8 into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. A free 6-month trial subscription to the system is included with the purchase of an A8.
