2013 Scion xD Preview

The 2013 Scion xD is a budget-priced 4-door hatchback available in two trim levels. According to Scion, the xD has aggressive styling, including a long and narrow back window, and accentuated wheel flares. Its competitors include the Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2, and Honda Fit. The Scion xD is available in a single trim level, with many port- and dealer-installed options available. The 2013 model receives some interior upgrades, including a modernized instrument panel and subtle changes to the exterior styling.

Exterior Features

The Scion xD is available in seven standard colors: black, Black Currant, silver, red, dark blue, white, and dark grey. Also available is a two-tone scheme: bright metallic blue with a black roof. Power side mirrors include integrated turn signals. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard and come with a choice of three covers. Other standard features include intermittent front windshield wipers, rear window wiper, chrome-tipped exhaust, multi-reflector halogen headlights, and a body-color rear spoiler.

Interior Features

Standard interior features on the xD include air conditioning, power windows with driver's-side auto-down, power door locks, remote keyless entry, engine immobilizer, rear window defogger, digital clock, multi-information display, analog tachometer with trip meter, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, sport front bucket seats, 60/40-split reclining fold-flat rear seats, dual sun visors with vanity mirrors, a 6-speaker sound system, and cloth upholstery. Overall color scheme is dark grey. Cargo space with rear seats folded amounts to 35.7 cubic feet.

Optional Features

Port- or dealer-installed enhancements to the exterior include a rear bumper protector, paint protection film, mud flaps, carbon fiber B-pillar appliqué, and a remote engine starter. Eighteen-inch wheels are available, with a choice of a 9-spoke design or a black or silvertone 5-spoke design; other wheel covers are optional, as are alloy or TRD (Toyota Racing Development) wheel locks. Interior options include a cargo liner, cargo net, cargo cover, cargo tote, Scion's security system, center armrest, sport steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ashtray cup, and a variety of floor mats. A premium audio system and satellite radio are available. Optional performance features include TRD lowering springs, sport muffler, rear sway bar, front strut tire brace, performance shocks, upgraded oil cap, and performance brake kit. Scion offers a varied menu of service plans.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Scion xD is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 128 horsepower and mated with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard.

Fuel Economy

With either a manual or an automatic transmission, EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Scion xD are 27/33/29 mpg (city/highway/combined).


Standard safety features of note on the 2013 Scion xD include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, Smart Stop technology, front and rear side curtain air bags, front air bags, and side air bags.

As of this writing, no safety ratings are available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2013 xD. From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) the 2013 Scion xD receives a rating of "Good"--the Institute's highest--in frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof strength tests.
