  • Optional engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder

Introduction

The new 2013 BMW X1 is a subcompact crossover SUV that is smaller than the BMW X3 and rides higher than the BMW 3 Series Wagon. When it goes on sale for $31,545, it will be the least expensive BMW model available in the U.S.

Exterior FeaturesThe BMW X1 has been on sale in various regions of the world since 2011, and gets a subtle update prior to arriving in America from the assembly plant in Leipzig, Germany. New headlights, available with LED accent lights and LED corona-ring running lights, and additional body-color trim are new for 2013, as well as a redesigned rear bumper and new turn-signal indicators integrated into the side mirror housings.

Interior Features

Upgrades for 2013 extend to the BMW X1's interior, where new electroplated metallic trim, chrome accents, high-gloss black vent surrounds, and a minor center console design update.

Optional Features

In addition to a more powerful 6-cylinder engine and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, the new 2013 BMW X1 can be upgraded with a navigation system and a Xenon Light package. BMW has not confirmed additional options as this preview is published, but it is fair to say that buyers will likely be able to choose from a variety of extra-cost option packages and separately available features.

Under the Hood

BMW X1 model designations are based on what type of powertrain is installed in the vehicle. The least expensive model, the 2013 X1 sDrive28i, is a rear-wheel-drive model equipped with BMW's Twin-Power turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. BMW confirms that it will generate 240 horsepower in the new X1, but does not offer a torque figure. Like other applications of this engine within BMW's broader lineup, peak torque is expected to be available across a wide and flat powerband starting at low rpm.

If you want BMW's AWD system, the X1 xDrive28i is the least expensive way to meet your requirements. The base price for this model, also equipped with the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, is $33,245.

BMW will also sell the X1 xDrive35i for $39,345. It has a Twin-Power turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower, and comes standard with xDrive AWD.

All three models are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW EfficientDynamics brake regeneration is also standard, and the X1 "28i" models include Auto Start-Stop to help conserve fuel. This technology automatically shuts the engine off when idling, such as when waiting for a traffic light to change, and then re-starts when the driver takes his or her foot off of the brake pedal.Fuel EconomyAt the time this preview was published, the EPA had not finalized fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 BMW X1.
