Four Wheel Drive, Rear Wheel Drive
Pickup trucks have become the go-to vehicles for people from all backgrounds. Automakers have adapted by creating more luxurious and capable models every year. We now have off-road-ready models from every truck brand, and the upgrades have extended to the heavy-duty (HD) side of the market. Ford has offered the beefy Tremor package for its F-Series Super Duty trucks for a while. Chevrolet is now getting into the game with the new Silverado HD ZR2 and ZR2 Bison. The trucks get upgraded suspension, more muscular styling, and American Expedition Vehicles helped design the more hardcore Bison variant.
Chevrolet updated its HD truck line for 2024 with a much-improved interior design, newly available tech, and more safety equipment. The new Silverado HD ZR2 models build on the latest trucks and join the existing Colorado ZR2 and Silverado 1500 ZR2. They're only available with the Silverado 2500 Crew Cab configuration, which gets a standard 6.6-liter gas V8. The trucks retain their work-ready capabilities and get additional off-road drive modes.
Though they bear the profile of the standard Chevy Silverado HD, the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison get unique styling touches and functional upgrades that make them stand out. The grille is unique to ZR2 models and features black trim with a large Chevy "flowtie" logo and red tow hooks. Chevrolet's distinctive logo is basically a hollow version of the classic bowtie that enables better airflow to the engine compartment.
The wheel opening moldings have integrated mudguards, and the truck rides 1.5 inches taller than other Silverado HD variants. Chevy equips 18-inch wheels for both ZR2 models, and the standard ZR2 gets 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. Both come standard with integrated body-side steps, a bed cargo box, and a power tailgate. Chevy's Multi-Flex tailgate is available, too.
The Silverado HD received interior improvements for 2024, which extend to the new off-road variants. Black and grey leather upholstery comes standard, and Chevy says it designed the truck's interior materials for easy cleaning. Like the rest of the HD truck line, Chevy significantly updated the ZR2's interior from the year before. The trucks get a new center console with an available wireless smartphone charging pad. The cupholders have more space, and back-seat passengers get climate vents and controls. Chevy also added storage options, including a hidden compartment, two glove boxes, and a sunglass holder behind the infotainment display.
Two powertrains are available for the 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 and ZR2 Bison, including the standard 6.6-liter gas V8. It makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The available 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 produces 470 hp and 975 pound-feet of torque. Chevy pairs both engines with a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, and the ZR2s come with 4-wheel drive.
The regular ZR2 gets extensive underbody skid plates, Multimatic DSSV dampers, a rear electronic-locking differential, and beefier front control arms. Chevy says the race-inspired dampers offer unlimited tuning variability to control damping, which provides more precise performance and better control in all situations.
The ZR2 Bison adds a unique bumper configuration for better approach and departure angles, winch mounting points, and more underbody protection. Both get a new Off-Road driving mode, which adjusts the braking, traction control, throttle, and transmission shift points to provide better traction in the dirt.
On top of that, the truck retains its heavy-duty capability, including a 3,397-pound payload rating. Towing reaches 18,500 pounds with the diesel engine, and Chevy offers advanced trailering tech, including a blind-spot warning system that covers the truck and trailer.
Heavy-duty trucks get very little attention for their safety equipment, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does not subject them to crash testing. Even so, Chevy equips an array of advanced driver aids as standard, including automatic emergency braking, a following-distance indicator, forward-collision warning, front pedestrian braking, and lane-departure warning.
The Silverado HD is available with trailering-centric driver aids, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning with towing capability. An available "transparent trailer" view lets the driver see what's behind the trailer, and the gross combined weight alert notifies the driver if the truck and trailer are overweight.
