The Friday Five: The Maybach Wears Highest American MSRP, Hummer EV a Bummer in RSVPs, and Dodge Muscle Keeps Flexing Edition

Beverly Braga | Oct 23, 2020

This week, the resurrected GMC Hummer and refreshed Genesis G70 made headlines, even though neither will go on sale for several months due to their 2022 model designations. And as the wave of electric vehicles continues to surge into global markets, we clarified those murky waters regarding what EV range numbers really mean in the U.S. and Europe.

But that’s not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the Most Expensive Vehicle Built in the U.S. - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS will hold two distinctions when it arrives in showrooms later this year. The large crossover will be the first-ever SUV to carry the Maybach name and, two, its $160,500 starting price (plus a $1,050 destination fee) will make it the most expensive vehicle produced in the United States. That’s right. Mercedes-Benz manufactures the Maybach at its production facility in Vance, Alabama.

Powered by an electrified twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, the Maybach GLS600 4Matic produces 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Zero-to-60 mph clocks in at 4.8 seconds. Additionally, the Maybach deletes the standard third-row seat found on Mercedes-Benz GLS models to provide customers with reclining 2nd-row opulence in the chauffeur-centric cabin.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 is competitively priced and optioned to compete with the Aston Martin DBX and Bentley Bentayga in the ultra-lux SUV space.

Reservations for 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 Sell Out in 10 Minutes

On Tuesday, General Motors unveiled the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. Within 10 minutes of its debut, all reservation slots for the Edition 1, available for a fully-refundable $100, were full. Ensuing reservations fell to the waiting list. GMC, however, has not released production numbers, so determining actual demand is anyone’s guess. Did they fill all ten reservation spots or 10,000? Who knows? In the meantime, here’s what we can confirm.

The flagship (and earliest arriving) Hummer EV Edition 1 starts at $112,595, and GMC expects to begin deliveries next fall. Fully loaded with every option, including transparent and removable roof panels, the Edition 1 is outfitted with a tri-motor powertrain, produces 1,000 horsepower, accelerates to 60 mph in about 3 seconds, and offers a range of 350 miles.

Other Hummer EV trims can still be reserved, like the entry-level EV2 (which starts at $79,995), EV2X, and EV3X. Unfortunately, these models would be for the most patient of consumers as the next Hummer EV to arrive is the EV3X, which isn’t due until the end of 2022.

Volvo Revamps Car-Subscription Service for More Consumer Flexibility - Find the best Volvo deals!

Care by Volvo is the only flat-rate vehicle subscription service offered nationwide by an automaker, and it now allows customers to swap out vehicles after just four months instead of the previous one-year agreement. The flexibility makes the subscription service an even more enticing alternative to traditional vehicle leasing and financing.

Also, earlier this year, Care by Volvo expanded to include actual in-dealership stock rather than pre-configured fleet vehicles, affording customers even more choice and convenience.

Volvo bases subscription rates on the vehicle, but they include well-equipped models. For example, the S60 sedan or XC40 SUV will set you back $650 a month but include the R-Design trim level. Mileage is limited to 1,250 miles monthly (similar to lease deals), but the subscription amount also covers insurance, tire and wheel protection, roadside assistance, maintenance, and other services.

Tesla Model 3 Gets a New Wardrobe - Find the best Tesla deals!

Now that Tesla is finally turning a profit, the automaker also is finally performing vehicle updates that are not of the over-the-air variety. For one, the Tesla Model 3 gets a refresh, including a revised look, some new features, and added range.

New black trim replaces chrome on the door handles, window surround, and turn signals on the exterior. There are also new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs, and the Performance model comes with unique 20-inch “Überturbine” wheels as standard. The interior sees a slew of new materials for the sill plates, door handles, window buttons, and seat controls. Magnetically-attached sun visors and wireless device charging are also new to the car.

Most importantly, the driving range increases. Already the most energy-efficient passenger car in the U.S., the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus now travels 263 miles (a rise of 13 miles), Performance hits 315 miles (up 16), and the Long Range goes on for 353 (up 31 miles). Pricing starts at $39,190 (including the $1,200 destination fee), with vehicle deliveries to begin within the next 5 to 9 weeks.

Fiat Chrysler to Continue Building Muscle Cars — For Now - Find the best Dodge deals!

Thanks to a new labor-agreement deal between Fiat Chrysler and Canadian auto union Unifor, the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Charger will live on for at least another three years. Assembled in FCA’s Brampton, Ontario, plant, the cars will likely remain in their current iterations, despite the decades-long rumor mill of next-generation muscle cars.

The Brampton agreement is a scant $38-million investment compared to FCA putting $1.2 billion into other Canadian ventures, so any major production overhaul — to the plant and/or vehicle lineup — won’t be happening until after 2024.
