Ford announced today that it will revive the Mustang Mach 1 as a limited-edition model for 2021. The resurrected Mustang Mach 1 will be available not long after the new Mustang Mach-E, an electric crossover SUV, goes on sale.
But there’s no talk of alternative propulsion here. For the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1, the automaker looks back to the glory days of the muscle car with a good, old-fashioned, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8.
“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever.”
In the Mustang GT, the V-8 makes 460 horsepower in standard specification and 480 horsepower in the Bullitt edition, so the Mach 1 is sure to produce even more, possibly flirting with the 500-horsepower mark. Ford will most likely require that Mach 1 owners know how to row their own gears, as their high-performance Mustangs have traditionally been equipped exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Mach 1 purports to be a bridge between the Mustang GT and the ridiculously fast Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500. Even though details about what sets the Mach 1 apart were not a part of Ford’s announcement, we can deduce that “track-capable” means improved cooling, suspension, and braking at a minimum. Previous Mach 1 models also featured visual cues including a matte-black hood stripe and matching rear spoiler.
Ford first used Mach 1 to define a performance version of the 1969 Mustang, during what is now deemed as the “golden age” of muscle cars. Most recently, Ford offered a Mustang Mach 1 as part of its 2004 lineup.
Pricing is yet to be determined, but the current Mustang Bullitt starts at $47,705, while the Shelby GT350 starts at around $60,000. Expect the new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 to land in the low-$50,000 range.
