Online Volkswagen ID4 Ordering Process Opens in September

With a $100 reservation fee to order the new 2021 Volkswagen ID4 electric SUV, and another $400 deposit to have it shipped from the Zwickau, Germany factory to your dealership, you can be one of the first to own VW’s new long-range electric vehicle. Both the reservation and the deposit are fully refundable, according to the automaker, and the Volkswagen ID4 release date for specific regions of the U.S. market is scheduled for December 2020. By mid-2021, the ID4 will be available nationwide.

Volkswagen ID4 ordering opens in September on VW’s website, after the automaker officially reveals the new 5-passenger compact SUV. According to VW, ID4 range is about 310 miles on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle. Official EPA estimates are likely to vary from that number.

The Volkswagen ID4 ordering process is similar to those used by Ford and Tesla for the new VW’s direct competitors, the Mustang Mach-E and the Model Y. Using VW.com, you will be able to configure your new ID4, pay your reservation fee, and then monitor progress as the vehicle you reserved is built. 

When it is ready for shipment, an additional $400 deposit puts your ID4 on the journey to your local dealership. When the vehicle arrives, you can use Volkswagen’s new “Sign Anywhere” digital signature tool to finalize paperwork without visiting the dealership (where state and local laws allow).

Volkswagen ID4 specs and information are slowly trickling out in advance of the SUV’s official reveal. In addition to the driving range estimate, the new EV boasts a 0.28 coefficient of drag, which helps to maximize range on the highway. At first, the ID4 will come with rear-wheel drive. Later, an all-wheel-drive version will be available.

Volkswagen ID4 pricing is not yet set, but given where this SUV’s primary competitors start, you can expect the base version to cost about $50,000 before applying any federal or local tax credits and rebates. Volkswagen will move ID4 production to its Chattanooga, Tennessee factory in 2022.
