McLaren Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary At Goodwood

Dustin Hawley | Jul 05, 2023

Boasting a strong presence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren is set to honor the vision of its founder, Bruce McLaren, with tributes commemorating the monumental feats achieved over the past six decades. Starting from McLaren's formation in 1963 to the triumphant capturing of motorsport's unofficial ‘Triple Crown’ of victories at the Indianapolis 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and Le Mans 24 Hours, the event will serve as a testament to the legacy of the brand's significant milestones. In a fusion of history and forward-thinking, McLaren Automotive will debut two new models in a dynamic global presentation on the Goodwood Hillclimb amid a spectacular lineup of iconic cars running and on display.

Leading McLaren's lineup at this year's Festival is the new 750S, a V8-engine supercar, sharing the limelight with the single-seat, closed-cockpit Solus GT. The hybrid V6 supercar, Artura – a testament to McLaren's pursuit of high-performance sustainability – will also feature prominently at the event.

A 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 powers the 750S and is 66 lbs lighter than the 720S it supersedes, with a 0-60 time of just 2.8 seconds. With its lightest dry weight at only 2813 lbs, the 750S surpasses its closest competitor by a whopping 425 lbs. The car's dynamic prowess is further unleashed by implementing a new version of McLaren's Proactive Chassis Control hydraulic suspension, known as PCC III.

The Solus GT, a track-only development of the futuristic concept featured in the Gran Turismo SPORT video game, makes a breathtaking leap from the virtual world into reality. Only 25 customer cars are slated for production, all of which have already found owners. The Solus GT boasts a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine that can rev beyond 10,000rpm and a bespoke, seven-speed sequential transmission.

With the whole car tipping the scales at less than 2205 lbs, the Solus GT promises performance of truly incredible proportions, targeting 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed exceeding 200 mph. Wind-tunnel research and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) have shaped an aerodynamic package capable of generating over 2645 lbs of downforce, underlining the Solus GT's extreme track proficiency.

In addition to the Supercar and Manufacturer batches, a selection of other McLaren models will also be on display. The Artura; McLaren’s first V6 hybrid supercar, will join the Hillclimb action alongside the P1™ hypercar, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Ultimate Series models, including the McLaren Senna and Elva, will add to the exhilaration on the hill, joined by the 12C Job #1 – the first production 12C ever manufactured.

On each day of the festival, a ‘McLaren Moment’ will showcase a selection of the greatest racing machines in the brand's history. Attendees will have the chance to see Mika Häkkinen take the wheel of the MP4/14, the car in which he won the 1999 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship, Bruno Senna drive his uncle Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Formula 1 World Championship-winning MP4/6, and McLaren’s Le Mans 24 Hour race winner JJ Lehto take the helm of Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 MP4/23 F1 Championship car.

Spectators will also be treated to a variety of cars developed by McLaren Customer Racing, such as the 12C GT3, the 650S GT3, the 570S GT4, the victorious 720S GT3 X (which won the 2021 timed shootout with Rob Bell at the controls), the GT3 Evo, as well as the new Artura Trophy race car.

Furthermore, the first production Solus GT car will also be on display at McLaren House, the brand's hub at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, providing fans with a unique opportunity to delve into McLaren’s rich racing and automotive heritage. High-performance engineering company KW Special Projects (KWSP), based in Silverstone and specializing in supporting exclusive vehicle projects for road, track, and display, is working hand-in-hand with McLaren engineers as a technical supply partner.

Michael Leiters, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive, shared, “This year is the 60th anniversary of McLaren being founded, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the ideal event to celebrate six decades of thrilling performance. Alongside iconic cars from our past, we will be showcasing our current model range which together with two global dynamic debuts further strengthens the foundations for a new Future of Performance for McLaren”.

In this striking convergence of past, present, and future, McLaren demonstrates its ongoing commitment to pushing boundaries, exemplifying the relentless spirit of innovation that has been a hallmark of the brand since its inception. The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed will be a thrilling experience for spectators and a celebration of the resilience, vision, and achievements of one of the most prestigious names in the automotive and motorsports industries.
