2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe Specs, Release Date Announced

Liz Kim | May 17, 2021

BMW has confirmed a handful of engineering specs for the redesigned 2022 2 Series Coupe, which serves as an anchor point for the company’s car lineup. Before we get into the details, some clarification is in order.

2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe Camo

Here, we are talking about the all-new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe. It is a true 2-door coupe, and BMW builds it on a rear-wheel-drive platform. BMW also sells something called the 2 Series Gran Coupe. That’s actually a 4-door sedan built on a front-wheel-drive platform. The two cars share a name, but not much else.

BMW fans and driving purists alike must be pleased with this turn of events.

According to BMW, the new 2 Series Coupe will come in 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive model series. The automaker did not detail any changes to the 230i’s powertrain, which might mean it could stick with the existing 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. In today’s 230i, BMW says this engine supplies acceleration from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

At first, the new 2022 BMW 230i arrives with rear-wheel drive, but an xDrive (all-wheel drive) version will soon follow. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that BMW will also continue to offer a 6-speed manual transmission in the 230i, but history demonstrates the row ‘em yourself gearbox might not make the jump to the new-generation 2.

Speaking of jumps, the performance-oriented M240i variant sees a significant increase in power. This version’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine now delivers 382 horses, up 47 ponies from last year’s version of the car. As was true before, the M240i initially comes only with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission and xDrive AWD, and xDrive has a fully-variable M sports rear differential. BMW says a rear-drive version of the new M240i will make its appearance later.

Like every BMW, the new 2 Series was tested and perfected on the Nurburgring Nordschleife racing circuit in Germany and local roads near Munich. Undoubtedly, the car is tuned to elicit everything from grins to guffaws on the faces of driving enthusiasts.

To that end, a wider track and new shock absorbers leverage a 12% increase in torsional stiffness to improve the car’s ride and handling qualities. An adaptive M suspension is available, with enhanced drive mode settings to increase comfort or performance. BMW also promises a near 50:50 weight distribution, calibrates the xDrive AWD to deliver more power to the rear wheels, and improves the steering feel and response. Variable Sports Steering is available as an option.

Visually, BMW distinguishes the new 2022 M240i with aerodynamic enhancements, including a front lip spoiler, a front air splitter, air curtains, and air deflectors. These, plus underbody covers for the fuel tank and rear differential, collectively lower front-end lift by up to 50% compared to the outgoing M240i. This makes the car feel more firmly planted to terra firma than before.

BMW says it will start producing the 2 Series Coupe late this summer and will provide full details closer to that date. The car should arrive in showrooms by the fall of 2021.
