Ford has announced improved charging times for the new 2021 Mustang Mach-E, the automaker’s long-range electric vehicle (EV) designed to take on the Tesla Model Y. Additionally, the company announced an expansion of its FordPass Charging Network, which added 1,000 charging stations and 5,000 plugs to the already robust nationwide network.
According to Ford, the results of ongoing engineering work show a 30% improvement in the amount of driving range available to a Mustang Mach-E customer after 10 minutes connected to a DC fast charger. Here are the claims, by battery type and with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD):
Furthermore, Ford says the standard-range battery can achieve up to an 80% charge in as few as 38 minutes while using a DC fast charger, while the long-range battery can reach that same state of charge in 45 minutes.
If you charge the Mustang Mach-E at home using the standard mobile charger cord and a 240-volt power outlet, the EV recharges at a rate of 21 miles per hour. Get the available 48-amp Ford Connected Charging Station, and recharging time improves to 30 miles per hour.
Using a standard 120-volt household power outlet, a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E recharges at a rate of 3 miles per hour. That means it would take 100 hours (more than four days) to fully recharge an extended-range battery in a rear-drive Mach-E. Clearly, this method is neither practical nor recommended.
The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E arrives at the end of 2020, with prices starting at $43,895 before applying federal income tax credits or state and local incentives.
