Toyota Camry Hybrid Model Years and History

Following a full redesign last year, the Toyota Camry hits 2016 with no significant changes. A Camry Special Edition enters the model range, however, based on the SE trim, with unique interior accents, smoked taillights and more.

The Toyota Camry returns for 2015 with a full redesign, Toyota's engineers giving the car brand new styling, inside and out. The result is a much more striking Camry, with much bolder lines and a sportier demeanor. Even with these changes, buyers will be happy to find that the Camry continues to be as luxurious, quiet and easy to drive as ever.

For 2014, a 4-cylinder SE Sport trim joins the Camry lineup, with a sunroof, power driver's seat and 18-inch alloy wheels.

After a fairly serious refresh in 2012, the Camry enters 2013 with relatively minor changes. New standard equipment includes a display-based audio system on the L and Hybrid LE models. A blind spot monitoring system is available on the SE and the turn signals now have a lane change feature, allowing a single tap to produce three blinks of the turn signal. The only other changes include minor adjustments to the interior trim, most notably on the doors.

The 2012 Camry has been redesigned both inside and out. Although it rides on the same platform as 2011 models, it's been given all new bold-looking sheetmetal with a more aerodynamic style. The trunk is now larger, offering more storage space and all models feature 60/40 split folding rear seats, providing the ability to transport longer items. The Hybrid model features an updated 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine and electric motor combination, which provides a total of 200 horsepower, up from last year's 188. The interior features increased headroom as well as hip and legroom, and the seats have been redesigned to be more comfortable.

Following several interior and exterior refinements last year as part of a mid-cycle update, the 2011 Toyota Camry remains relatively unchanged.

The Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid enter the 2010 model year with a list of enhancements inside and out, which include exterior styling, performance, safety, audio and convenience features. Of note is a new powertrain: A new 2.5-liter inline-4 equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) will produce 169 hp for Camry LE and XLE models, replacing the 158-hp 2.4 of years past. For sporty performance, SE models get additional tuning and output is bumped to 179 horsepower, 21 more horsepower than the previous 4-cylinder engine. The new engine can be combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift, which replace the previous 5-speeds. Outside, the front bumper and grille have been revised, with a larger lower intake and headlamps, while the rear taillights are restyled as well. The Camry Hybrid receives a unique grille and front bumper, with restyled fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. Interior refinements include an optional upgraded stereo system and Fraichir seating in the Hybrid, which blends silk protein and synthetic fibers for a soft texture. Vehicle Stability Control is now standard on all Camrys, as is auto up/down window control on all four doors.

Across the board, 2009 Toyota Camry prices are up $150, and remote keyless entry is now standard on all non-Hybrid models instead of being an upgraded item on the SE and XLE trims. On the V6 SE, the Sport Convenience Package is now called Package #1, and the Sport Leather Package is renamed Package #2. Standard equipment on the Hybrid now includes alloys instead of 2007's steel wheels, while the optional Comfort & Convenience Package keeps the same price and content but is now simply referred to as the Convenience Package.

For all but the Hybrid, 2008 Toyota Camry prices are up $100 across the board, and the lineup and option offerings remain the same. The Hybrid's base price drops $1,000 to $25,200, due to loss of some standard content--steel wheels replace 2007's alloys, the steering wheel and shift knob lose their leather coating, the JBL audio system with six-disc changer is replaced by a single-CD setup, the auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass has been replaced by a manual model, and Bluetooth is off the list of standards. A new Upgrade Package is available for $1,150 and adds back this formerly standard equipment. The navigation system, which in 2007 was a stand-alone option, is now only available with the content of the Upgrade Package.

A new Hybrid model joins the Camry lineup for 2007, and the V6 engine gains 40% more power, while all Camry models receive improved brakes and handling. The entire Camry lineup is all new for '07, with a look that borrows cues from Toyota's Lexus luxury brand. Inside, all Camrys have a quieter, more refined ride and improved interior comfort, and more standard safety features. The Camry's wheelbase is about the same size as the outgoing model, but rear legroom has been slightly increased. The Camry Hybrid borrows Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, originally showcased in the Prius, to earn EPA fuel economy estimates of 40 city, 38 highway. Starting at $26,200, the Hybrid is nearly $2,000 less expensive than the Camry XLE V6.
