In 1998, the Montero rolled off the assembly line with a newer look. New front bumpers and a grille, new fenders and a new quarter panels in the rear complemented the exterior. Meanwhile, the interior got a new steering wheel, and standard ABS, A/C, alloy wheels and the popular third-row. 1999-2000 saw only a few changes made to packages and trims, and the redaction of one body color. Improved suspension and handling with a roomier interior earmarked 2001, while only subtle changes were made to the car for 2002. By 2003, Mitsubishi released a new version of the Montero, complete with a new grill, front fascia and headlamps. A punchier 3.8-liter V6 engine offered more oomph, while the body cladding and tail lights also got a makeover. 2003 saw the addition of a tire-pressure monitoring system as a standard feature and some updates made to the gauge cluster. Climate control, A/C in the rear and power seats in the front also became standard features. The addition of 17 alloy wheels marked the only changes for 2004-2005.
