2009 marks the final year for the supercar collaboration between German car maker Mercedes-Benz and British tuner McLaren. Mercedes-Benz plans on building all its future super sports cars in-house with AMG. For its swan song, the SLR McLaren is available only as a roadster.
SelectBrowse ListingsMercedes-Benz has changed the well regarded SLR McLaren from a coupe to a roadster for the 2008 model year. The engine ratings match the 2006 numbers of 617 horsepower and 575 ft-lbs of torque. Though Mercedes-Benz has neither confirmed nor denied future plans for the SLR, 2008 is rumored to be the last year for the Teutonic supercar.
SelectBrowse ListingsMercedes-Benz redesigned their SLR McLaren coupe for 2007, badging it as the "722 Edition" and giving it all sorts of performance enhancements. Horsepower has increased from 617 to 641 and torque has also been boosted, from 575 to a jaw-dropping 605 ft-lbs. These engine advancements, along with a curb weight that is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the 2006 model, have cut 0 to 60 times down to a reported 3.6 seconds. To accommodate the extra power, larger Brembo ceramic disc brakes have been installed. A new front air splitter, a lower ride height, a stiffer suspension setup, and decreased body roll enhance the already superb handling characteristics. New 19-inch alloy wheels add a distinctive visual touch. Inside the cockpit, revised instrumentation, more carbon fiber, various 722 insignias, and red stitching greet the driver.
SelectBrowse ListingsAfter several years of a successful partnership on the track in Formula 1 competition, Mercedes-Benz and the McLaren race team collaborated in the creation of a new supercar. The resulting road-going vehicle arrived in the United States for 2005 called the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. A shape given form through lightweight carbon fiber, the SLR McLaren featured a low-profile appearance. The front end incorporated Formula 1-inspired design elements while the rear featured a deployable spoiler that functioned as improving downforce and served as an automatic air brake. Classified as a mid-engined vehicle, the AMG-supplied supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine was positioned in front of the passenger cabin but well back from the front wheels. 617 horsepower channeled through the rear wheels provided enough force to move SLR McLaren from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds. Offered as a sport coupe from 2005 to 2007, the 2008 model year saw the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren transform into a roadster. Providing a thrilling, well-balanced open-air driving experience when the top is down, it only takes 10 seconds for the SLR McLaren Roadster's semi-automatic roof to fit in place. Intentioned to be a low production high-performance vehicle, total production of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren line was calculated at 2,000 cars worldwide. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG succeeded the SLR McLaren for the 2011 model year.
