In 2018 the Hyundai Sonata gets updates to the suspension and steering aimed at improving the quality and feel of the ride. It was restyled inside and out and all models now come standard with blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist. On the 2.0T models, a new 8-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous 6-speed.

A 9.8 KWh lithium polymer battery pack propels a 67-horsepower permanent magnet synchronous motor. Compared to the conventional Sonata hybrid, the 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid's battery is five times larger. The electrical hardware of the vehicle is combined with a 154-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission with a Shiftronic manual shift mode. Combined fuel economy of the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is rated at 40 miles per gallon. Available as a base model and Limited trim level, the Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is presented as a well-equipped sedan. Dual-zone automatic temperature control, heated front seats, eight-inch touchscreen navigation system, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist as well as Hyundai's Blue Link telematics is standard.
