Gaining a massive foothold in the sport utility vehicle segment with the Explorer and Expedition in the 1990s, Ford was advantaged with low gas prices as well as a family market craving an alternative to a minivan. Since the mid-2000s, Ford has devoted a greater effort into crossover vehicles. Eventually the mid-sized truck-like Explorer evolved towards a larger car-based crossover platform. The Edge and Flex are examples of crossover utility vehicles constructed with more on-road centric performance. Innovative features such as a foot-operated tailgate and carpeting made with recycled plastic bottles were first introduced on the current generation Escape. The turbocharged EcoBoost engine has grown in popularity with the Ford sport utility vehicle and crossover family. EcoBoost power is now used to power the full-sized Expedition.
