Volvo is rewinding its plans for an electric-only lineup by 2030, following numerous other automakers worldwide. As part of the strategic shift, the Swedish automaker has released details for the redesigned 2025 Volvo XC90. Volvo will sell the updated 2025 XC90 hybrid SUV—technically a 2025.5 model—alongside the existing carryover 2025 model.
The new XC90 gets some updates inside and out since the Swedish automaker won’t replace it with a fully electric version anytime soon. It’s been a while since the automaker redesigned the popular three-row SUV, as it was all-new for 2016 and lightly refreshed for 2023.

Volvo sells the seven-seat XC90 luxury SUV in B5 or B6 hybrid options or with a T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. Core, Plus, and Ultra trim levels are available. Each comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) and Volvo’s new adaptive suspension dampers, while air springs that can raise or lower the SUV are available.
- Mid-cycle refresh of Volvo’s largest SUV
- Updated exterior and interior styling
- Trio of hybrid powertrains, including two 48-volt hybrid setups and a PHEV with an 18.8-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery
- Improved sound deadening
- Updated adaptive damping suspension with available air springs
- New 11.2-inch Android-based infotainment system
- Available to order now
- Pricing for the updated 2025 Volvo XC90 starts at $59,745

As with any redesign of a popular model, Volvo didn’t tweak the formula too much when updating the XC90. The redesign features new, slimmer headlights, an updated crosshatch grille, and rear taillights that remind me of Darth Maul’s head. Volvo offers 20-, 21-, or 22-inch wheels on the XC90 and a new Mulberry Red exterior color.

Volvo is implementing the enhanced interior of the electric EX90 into the new XC90, which features textured materials and large air vents. Up front, a more extensive vertically oriented touchscreen measures 11.2 inches and runs Android-based software, although users can switch to Apple CarPlay if they want.

The 2025 Volvo XC90 B5 and B6 hybrid models have standard AWD and pair a 48-volt electric motor with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. The combination produces 247 horsepower in the XC90 B5 and 295 hp in the XC90 B6, which adds a supercharger to the four-cylinder and runs on the more efficient Miller combustion cycle.
Upgrade to the XC90 T8 to get the plug-in hybrid that Volvo estimates will travel up to 32 miles on electric power alone. It pairs the four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and 18.8-kWh battery.

Volvo’s reputation for safety stands, as the new XC90 comes equipped with a full suite of active safety features using cameras and radar technology. Things like lane-keeping assistance and active collision-avoidance tech are standard on every trim.
The automotive industry is shifting toward hybrids rather than going all-in on fully electric vehicles. Volvo giving welcome updates to its popular three-row XC90 will help it better compete with midsize luxury SUVs like the BMW X5, Genesis GV80, and Porsche Cayenne. It stands out with its trio of electrified options, especially a PHEV that can take you to and from work solely on electric power.
