For 2017, the Toyota Highlander gets a new engine, a new and much bigger grille, a new transmission, and a new model option: the SE. The Hybrid version of the Highlander also adds more trim levels for 2017. A few things remain the same about the 2017 Highlander. The base model, the LE, has the same engine it's had in previous years, a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic transmission. The new, optional engine is a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and better fuel economy than the four-cylinder engine. There's also a hybrid engine that includes a 3.5-liter V6 and AC 650-volt permanent-magnet motor. It 306 net horsepower and fuel economy that's just a hair better than the optional, non-hybrid V6. New standard safety features for 2017 include the Safety Sense Plus (TSS-P) system, which has forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, and active cruise control.
