In 2000, Volvo tapped into the entry-level market with their affordable V40 sedan and its wagon cousin. For 2001, Volvo added head-impact airbags, two-stage front airbags, a child seat safety system and a more powerful engine with a five-speed transmission. The interior was also updated to include a new center stack and higher quality materials. The exterior got new headlamps, fenders and bumpers. Only minor trim level tweaks were in store for 2002. But in 2003, a CD player was added as a standard feature, the grille was updated, a new three-spoke steering wheel was added, and the gauge cluster was revamped. No significant changes were in store for 2004.
