Toyota RAV4 Model Years and History

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has received a comprehensive redesign, and its powertrain lineup has been electrified. The gas-only engine option has been discontinued, with the vehicle now offered exclusively with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

For 2025, the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid both carry over with minimal changes.

For 2024, the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid both carry over with minimal changes.

For 2023, the RAV4 carries over with minimal changes, while the RAV4 Hybrid gains a new Woodland trim.

For 2022, the RAV4 carries over with minimal changes, while the RAV4 Hybrid gains a new SE trim.

For 2021, the highly anticipated Toyota RAV4 Prime arrives as one the most fuel-efficient and quickest RAV4 to date. The rest of the RAV4 lineup receives minor changes.

After a full redesign last year, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 adds an additional TRD Off-Road model this year. It gets 18-inch wheels with all terrain tires, a TRD Off-Road suspension kit, a standard torque vectoring AWD drivetrain and increased towing capacity up to 3500 pounds. Every trim benefit from integrated Android Auto and Sirius XM radio capabilities while XLE models lose the standard sunroof to the optional Convenience package. A plug-in hybrid model is expected to hit the scene for the 2021 lineup.

The RAV4 gets a full redesign for 2019. The small SUV has gradually increased in size over successive generations, and the latest one continues that tradition, growing by an inch or two. Interior space is up over the previous model, particularly in the back seat, while under the skin the new RAV4 gets a more capable all-wheel drive system and a hybrid option. While previous generation RAV4s have had friendly styling and a cheerful demeanor, the latest version of the compact SUV appears to have grown up and gotten a little bit more serious. The styling is now bold and aggressive, matching the rest of the Toyota lineup with a big grille and available blacked out wheels, making the new RAV4 a standout choice for those in the compact SUV market.

Take on new roads and adventure even harder with the RAV4's new Adventure trim. It includes a tow package, higher ride height, 18-inch wheels and access to a new cold weather package.

For 2017 The RAV4 remains mostly unchanged. The biggest news is the addition of a top of the line Platinum model, which slots in above the Limited as the most expensive and nicest RAV4 trim. The sportier SE trim meanwhile, is also available as a Hybrid for 2017. Toyota's Safety Sense electronics suite also comes standard across the whole model range for this year, making the RAV4 a good choice for those with growing families, no matter the trim level.

For 2016, the Toyota RAV4 features a restyled front end. A new RAV4 Hybrid debuts, available in XLE and Limited trims. A new RAV4 SE trim is also new.

The Toyota RAV4 gets a new Blizzard Pearl Premium package, which is available on Limited trims. Essentially an appearance package, the Blizzard Pearl Premium package features unique paint and machine-finished wheels. The XLE trim also gets a redesigned set of 17-inch wheels for 2015.

The 2014 Toyota RAV4 is carried over into 2014, following 2013's full redesign. A few new colors appear, including Blue Crush and Shoreline Blue Pearl. Toyota's Entune smartphone integration system becomes standard on XLE and Limited RAV4 models.

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 has been completely redesigned, with an all-new look that's sleeker and more aerodynamic, plus new 6-speed automatic transmissions and a newly available Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel drive system. The V6 option is gone, and so is the spare tire hanging off the back-- it's been moved under the cargo floor and the side-hinged rear door replaced by a more conventional top-hinged one. Interior features including several new active and passive safety features (including a Blind Spot monitoring system and Rear Cross Traffic Alert), a back-up camera has been made standard and infotainment systems are all-new.

Toyota has made significant updates to the in car entertainment system for the 2012 RAV4. Base models get a new Bluetooth enabled stereo that allows streaming from wireless devices. The upscale Limited version now has an optional display type audio/navigation system featuring Toyota's Entune service.

A new Upgrade Value Package is available on the base models. It includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio, a power sunroof and steering wheel audio controls.

Following a mild restyling last year, the 2010 Toyota RAV4 receives only minor styling enhancements, including chrome-accented interior appointments on the Limited model.

The RAV4 gets a mild restyling, an upgraded interior, and a number of other changes for 2009. Most notably, the base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine has been replaced by a new 2.5-liter one that's not only more powerful but also more fuel-efficient. Front and rear styling has been redone for 2009, with a new grille and bumper in front, and redesigned tail lamps. Most models also get a redesigned rear step-up bumper with black protector molding. Inside there's a new standard seat fabric. Front-seat active headrests are added to the roster of safety features, and a rear backup monitor is newly optional. Turn-signal side mirrors are now offered on the Limited, and Base and Limited models get a new alloy wheel design. A Sport Appearance Package is also new and brings a redesigned rear door without the spare tire, plus chrome accents throughout and an exclusive exterior color, Elusive Blue Metallic.

Toyota's compact RAV4 sport-utility vehicle was completely redesigned in 2006. For 2008, minimal changes were made from the 2007 version. ISO-FIX child restraint system for rear outboard seating is now standard on all trims. An optional anti-theft system with an immobilizer is available on the base and Sport trims. In addition, XM satellite radio is now available as a post production option on all trims.

Toyota's compact RAV4 sport-utility vehicle was completely redesigned for 2006 and returns for 2007 with additional safety equipment. Front-seat-mounted side air bags and roll-sensing side curtain air bags for the first and second row, both formerly optional, are both now standard.
