Mercedes-Benz M-Class Model Years and History

For 2015, Mercedes has downsized a couple of their engine options in hopes of increasing fuel economy. The BlueTec Diesel offering is now a 2.1L 4-cylinder and the V8-powered ML550 now features a turbocharged V6 and has been redubbed the ML400.

For 2014, the M-Class features reinforced door sills, which have resulted in improved crash test ratings with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earned the luxury SUV a rating of "Top Safety Pick +" -- the first Mercedes-Benz to earn the distinction.

After its redesign last year, Mercedes-Benz has continued to improve on the M-Class. This year a rear-wheel-drive model has been added to the lineup as has an off road package which promises to increase the capabilities of the already rock-solid SUV. Safety has been improved with the addition of a collision prevention system, while optional massaging seats round out the notable changes for 2013.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV has been completely redesigned for 2012. Although the new version has about the same overall size and proportions as last year's model, it has revamped powertrains, including all-new V6 engines, that are smoother, strong and more efficient. The new M-Class also comes with expanded active and passive safety features, all-new electromechanical steering; a new active damping system, a more finely detailed interior and improved isolation of noise and vibration. Also joining the lineup later in the model year is an all-new version of the ML63 AMG high-performance version.

For 2011, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class vehicles receive only minor changes. Exterior side mirrors have been redesigned, while rearview mirrors feature a compass, as well as available Blind Spot assist and integrated rear view camera. The ML63 AMG model features a new hood, as well as darkened Bi-Xenon headlights with active light function. Diamond White Metallic exterior paint is new as well.

A new ML450 Hybrid model joins the lineup for 2010, offering a full hybrid powertrain and fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city, 24 highway. Otherwise, burl walnut trim is newly available on all models, as is a premium leather steering wheel. Palladium Silver and Steel Gray are new exterior colors. A new safety feature also debuts in the M-Class; POST-SAFE automatically unlocks the doors and shuts off the engine and fuel system after an accident.

The M-Class gets a number of exterior design updates for the 2009 model year, including a variety of revised wheels, new larger 3-louver grille (with large rectangular air inlet on ML63 AMG models), new side mirrors, new roof rails, and redesigned headlights and taillights utilizing the latest in projector beam and LED technology. A new BlueTEC diesel powertrain replaces last year's M320 CDI and is clean enough to be legal for sale in all 50 states. A new 2-wheel-drive ML350 is also now available. The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz COMAND system is also now featured, which includes Bluetooth capabilities, and an available audio unit uses voice controls, has a wireless cell phone link and has other optional features including navigation with real-time traffic updates. The PreSafe accident avoidance system is now standard.

For 2008 there are a number of equipment changes to Mercedes-Benz' V6 ML350 and diesel ML320 CDI, including larger, 19-inch wheels, a new grille and trim, and a standard power sunroof. A new ML550 model replaces the ML500, and it includes the new-generation, 382-horsepower, 5.5L V8, as well as additional equipment from in-house tuner AMG. The high-performance ML63 AMG carries over with no significant changes. Also, a limited-edition, "Edition 10" V6 model for 2008 comes loaded with features and celebrates the tenth anniversary of the M-Class. It has a unique interior scheme with Birch and Macadamia woods and black leather, special Obsidian Black or Arctic White paint, and a chrome shadow finish for the grille and skid plates.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has been completely redesigned for 2007. Besides the new body styling and underpinnings, there are two new engine choices. A 6.3L AMG V8 produces 503 horsepower, while a 3.0L V6 diesel engine also debuts. With an EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway, the diesel may be the new fuel economy champ among its peers.
