For 2015, Mercedes has downsized a couple of their engine options in hopes of increasing fuel economy. The BlueTec Diesel offering is now a 2.1L 4-cylinder and the V8-powered ML550 now features a turbocharged V6 and has been redubbed the ML400.

It has a unique interior scheme with Birch and Macadamia woods and black leather, special Obsidian Black or Arctic White paint, and a chrome shadow finish for the grille and skid plates.

A high-performance centered 342-horsepower ML55 AMG arrived in 2000 while a manually selectable automatic transmission also appeared the same year. Equipment enhancements followed the M-Class through the first generation such as Hill Descent Control in 2001 and side curtain airbags in 2002. The second generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class debuted for the 2006 model year as a larger seven-passenger capacity vehicle. A diesel-powered ML320 CDI premiered in 2008 alongside a 502-horsepower ML63 AMG. Offered exclusively as an all-wheel drive since its inception, a 2009 refresh of the M-Class included a new rear-wheel drive. The following year, a hybrid gasoline/electric version of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was added to the lineup but was dropped after 2011. Completely re-engineered in 2012, the sophisticated M-Class featured a new seven-speed automatic transmission as well as technologies such as Agility Control Suspension. After the 2015 model year, Mercedes-Benz adopted a new naming strategy to their vehicle lineup resulting in the M-Class being renamed the GLE-Class.
