The only update for the 1998 Mazda MPV was the CD player being offered as a standard feature. In 1999, a completely redesigned MPV was introduced, featuring unique features like roll-down windows, seating in the tailgate, third-row bench and sliding doors. In
2000, remote entry was made standard on luxury trims, safety-seat anchors were added to all models, and an updated NLEV compliant 2.5-liter V6 engine was introduced. A beefed up V6 engine was added for 2001 that offered 200 horsepower. Powered sliding doors were introduced as options as were 17 alloy wheels, and improved traction control, and updated brakes and suspension were added across all models. Only subtle changes were made to different trim levels for the 2003 model year. In
2004, a new hood, new headlights, a new front fender and grill, side skirts and new alloy wheels graced the MPV. Also, disc brakes and a rear A/C vent were added as standard equipment. No major changes were in store for 2005 or 2006.
