The Explorer Sport Trac, as Ford's Original Sport Truck, was introduced in 2001. For 2008, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac gets expanded standard features. Safety Canopy side-curtain air bags, fog lamps, and a power rear window are now on the standard-equipment list. The Limited model now includes an illuminated-entry keypad and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The optional navigation system has newly available voice activation, and the Sync voice-activated communication and entertainment interface is available for 2008. An all-wheel-drive Adrenalin model also debuted for 2008. Available with either a V6 or V8, the trim includes 20-inch wheels, all-season tires, and unique interior and exterior treatments. Three new exterior colors are added: Stone Green Metallic, Vapor Silver Clearcoat Metallic, and White Suede Metallic.

The 2007 Explorer Sport Trac has returned to the Ford lineup after a one year absence. Based on the new-for-2006 Explorer, the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac has a new chassis that is significantly stiffer. This results in a great improvement in both ride and handling. There is also a new independent rear suspension that not only smoothes out the ride, but also allows the 2007 Sport Trac to corner in a crisper fashion.

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac was constructed on a lengthened version of the reputable four-door sport utility vehicle’s platform. About 15 inches longer than the traditional Ford Explorer, the 2001 Explorer Sport Trac featured an enclosed five-passenger cabin combined with an open truck bed. Another distinguishing trait to the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is the use of the two-door Explorer Sport’s front end. From 2001 to 2005, the Explorer Sport Trac was exclusively powered by a 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine that could be mated to a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The manual gearbox option was dropped following the 2003 model year. Available with two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, the 2001 Explorer Sport Trac rolls on 16-inch aluminum wheels and features a standard anti-lock braking system.
Up to 1,540 pounds of payload capacity could be handled with the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The Explorer Sport Trac was unavailable for the 2006 model year but returned in 2007 as a completely new vehicle. The second-generation Explorer Sport Trac was a longer vehicle sharing styling with the 2006 Explorer four-door. Offered for the first time on the Sport Trac version of the Explorer, the 4.6-liter Modular V-8 engine produced a solid 292 horsepower paired with six-speed automatic transmission.
Equipped with a 4.5-foot long cargo box, the 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the optional V-8 powerplant also had the capacity to tow a maximum load of up to 6,800 pounds. In 2008, an Adrenalin of the four-wheel drive Explorer Sport Trac utilizing unique bodywork accessories and blacked-out grille accents. Ford SYNC integration was made optional on the vehicle in 2008 while Trailer Sway Control became standard in 2009. Due to slowing sales, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac was discontinued after the 2010 model year.
