Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD Model Years and History

Chevrolet’s 1500 level truck constructed using heavy-duty pickup truck attributes, the Silverado 1500HD was introduced during the 2001 model year. While the 1500 badging is commonly associated with the Chevrolet half-ton pickup truck family, the capabilities and construction of the Silverado 1500HD has ultimately allowed it to be considered similarly to a three-quarter ton truck. From 2001 to 2003, the most defining aspect of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD was the four-door crew cab body style. Until 2004, a Silverado 1500 Crew Cab was not available through the basic 1500 half-ton line-up. Offered with a rear-wheel and a four-wheel drivetrain choice, other noteworthy upgrades to the 2001 Silverado 1500HD over the regular half-ton model included a heavy-duty transmission as well as a beefier suspension and rear axle.

 

Engine power for the Silverado 1500HD was derived from a 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 powerplant. Producing 300 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque, the engine of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD allowed the pickup truck to handle up to 10,300 pounds. For the 2003 model year, a number of exterior and equipment changes were made to a refreshed Silverado 1500HD. The 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 engine provided the option of running compressed natural gas or run as a flexible fuel vehicle. 2003 also saw the availability of General Motors’ Quadrasteer four-wheel steering on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD.

 

The 2003 Silverado 1500HD equipped with Quadrasteer provided a reduced turning diameter measured at 37.4 feet. Inside the crew cab, standard features included air conditioning, front airbags and an AM/FM stereo system with CD player. For 2006, the Silverado 1500HD was treated to a new front-end design featuring a prominent bowtie badge on the grille and a striking power dome hood. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD carried into 2007 as a Classic model.
