BMW’s 3 Series—the core model in the German sport luxury automaker’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” lineup for 40 years and top-volume model in the U.S. market—is refreshed for 2016. BMW also introduces a redone flagship 7 Series sedan that features the company’s latest technology, including Gesture Control for operating infotainment functions in the cockpit. Also for 2016, enhanced Bluetooth with text messaging, extra mic, synching phonebooks, and USB connectivity is standard on more models. In addition, BMW introduces its X1 small premium SUV and updates the 6 Series coupe and convertible models. BMW’s first plug-in-hybrid SUV—the X4 xDrive40e—is added to the lineup. And for sport driving enthusiasts, some M variants receive a new Competition package option with handling upgrades and extra power.

Following is an overview of new or updated features for each 2016 BMW model:

  • Standard anti-theft system
  • Sport Line featuring sport seats, black high-gloss trim, accents, new wheels is standard on 228i
  • M2 is new with sleek exterior and interior and advanced safety technology
  • M2 is powered by a new turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight-6 engine that produces 365 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque, mated with 6-speed automatic transmission

  • Refreshed sedan and sport wagon with improved chassis
  • Sportier front and rear; sculpted, longer hood; set-back cabin; new headlight and taillight treatments
  • Interior updated with more chrome and high-gloss surfaces; lid for cupholders; new controls for adjusting seats
  • More fuel-efficient range of gasoline engines with output from 180-320 horsepower and a diesel that produces 180 horsepower
  • Newly developed manual and automatic transmissions
  • Standard Sport Line with special seats, trim, wheels on 328i, 328d, and 340i (including xDrive)
  • 340i sedan debuts with new inline-6 engine, producing 320 horsepower with 330 lb.-ft. of torque partnered with 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission
  • New Track Handling package with Michelin Super Sport tires optional
  • Enhanced Premium package with LED adaptive headlights, moonroof, lumbar support, 1-year free satellite radio, and 16-speaker sound system standard on 340i
  • Available color head-up display
  • Standar park-assist technology
  • First-ever plug-in hybrid 330e debuts
  • Colors added to exterior paint range include Mediterranean Blue Metallic, Platinum Silver Metallic, and Jatoba Brown Metallic
  • Estoril Blue Metallic exterior paint color available only for cars equipped with M Sport package
  • M3 sedan features new rear LED lights; more chrome accents; improved navigation unit; dashboard updates; keyless entry; 1-year free satellite radio; Harman/Kardon sound system; and Competition package option with handling upgrades and extra power boost

  • Sport Line standard on 4 Series coupe along with 18-in. wheels; matte chrome exterior trim and anti-theft alarm system
  • Keyless entry standard on 435i and 435i xDrive coupes
  • Standard sport seats, lumbar support, leather steering wheel with red stitching, and key fob
  • 1-year free satellite radio; Harman Kardon sound system standard on coupe
  • Special edition of 300 2016 M4 GTS track-ready coupes available
  • Competition package with handling upgrades and extra power boost available this spring for M4 coupe/convertible
  • M4 variants include standard keyless entry, 1-year free satellite radio, Harman Kardon sound system
  • M4 sedan features standard power tailgate and new paint option: Tanzanite Metallic Blue

  • Enhanced USB and Bluetooth
  • New wheel style selection available
  • Power tailgate standard on 550i and 550i xDrive sedans
  • Satellite radio, Harman Kardon surround sound standard on 550i and 550i xDrive sedans and Gran Turismo
  • Gearshift paddles standard on Gran Turismo and ActiveHybrid 5
  • Tanzanite Blue Metallic exterior paint color
  • New Venetian Beige/Black SensaTec and leather upholstery combinations offered for all sedans

  • Updated exterior styling elements and cabin details for all body styles, including 640i, 650i, and M variants
  • Standard redesigned adaptive LED headlights, automatic high beams, redone grille, new side mirrors and trim
  • Two new bi-color interior leather upholstery with wood trim selections
  • Next-generation iDrive infotainment/navigation system with touchpad control standard with enhanced Bluetooth
  • Five new exterior colors, including Frozen Brilliant White Matte
  • Standard sport exhaust system (640i)
  • Standard camera for reversing and rain-sensing wipers
  • New optional advanced driver safety and premium audio systems
  • Competition package with handling upgrades and power boost available for M6 coupe, M6 Grand Coupe, and M6 convertible

  • Redesign of flagship sedan with standard long-wheelbase model gaining 1 in. in length
  • Lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic reduces vehicle weight by 190 lbs.
  • Active kidney-shaped grille and air ventilator for cooling engine is first-time option in U.S.
  • Available 7-in. touch-command tablet
  • Wireless charging, Wi-Fi hot spot connectivity standard
  • New panoramic LED roof, ambiance lighting inside, LED lit carpet standard
  • 740i features 18-in. wheels, xenon headlights, sunroof, keyless entry/ignition
  • 750i equipped with19-in. wheels, power-closing doors and trunk lid, and LED headlights with automatic high beams
  • Interior includes standard leather upholstery, heated memory front seats, latest connectivity features and navigation, plus high-end sound system
  • 740i and 750i xDrive feature newest technologies: Gesture Control, Wireless Charging, and Display Key
  • Plug-in hybrid version is anticipated later this year
