Land Rover offers the new Range Rover in standard- and long-wheelbase configurations and three primary trim levels: SE, Autobiography, and First Edition. Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations will have a hand with a new SV trim that will arrive in 2023 with ultra-luxe interior features and exclusive design touches.

In proper form, Land Rover notes that the fifth-generation Range Rover’s design features “breathtaking modernity,” but most people will view it as an evolution of the SUV’s iconic shape. According to the automaker, the form owes its familiarity to three main lines: The SUV’s gently sloping roof from front to back, a strong beltline (where the doors meet the windows), and a rising sill line (rocker panels). The effect is immediately familiar but more modern and refined than previous Range Rovers. The new SUV also features a stronger boattail shape thanks to its slim taillights and tucked rear bumper.

While on the outside it may appear that the Range Rover isn’t much of a step forward, improvements made to the cabin through chassis refinements, tech updates, and feature additions are more than noteworthy. Land Rover says that its goal with the 2022 Range Rover is to minimize stress, distractions, and sound. The cabin features speakers built into the headrests of all seats that join a total of 35 speakers to provide a noise-canceling signal. Adaptive air suspension pre-emptively adjusts to changing road conditions using the Range Rover’s navigation system.
The SUV rides on a new MLA-Flex platform, which helps it maintain body control and deliver a smoother ride. The new architecture offers standard- and long-wheelbase configurations for the Range Rover, the latter of which is offered in an ultra-plush 5-seater setup for the first time. Power-assisted doors are another first for the Range Rover, and front-seat occupants can control all four doors from the vehicle’s infotainment touchscreen.
When the Range Rover SV arrives, its interior will feature several upgrades over the standard model. Land Rover says that plated metals, ceramics, mosaic patterns, and near-aniline leathers will be available. The automaker will also offer non-leather premium materials on the 24-way power seats with massaging functionality.
Three powertrain options are on offer for the 2022 Range Rover. Joining the existing mild-hybrid V6 and twin-turbo V8 is a new extended-range PHEV model. It uses an inline 6-cylinder engine, a 38.2-kWh battery, and a 105-kW electric motor. The system delivers 62 miles of all-electric driving and a combined 434 horsepower.
The base engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with a mild-hybrid system that delivers 395 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 offers 523 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. The Range Rover SV will come standard with the twin-turbo V8.
All new Range Rovers will come with standard all-wheel steering, which helps maneuver the big SUV in tight spaces and improves high-speed stability. Land Rover notes that a full-electric Range Rover is on the horizon for the 2024 model year.
The 2022 Range Rover is available with safety features that include:
No Land Rover models have been crash-tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is because of their low-volume sales and the expense behind testing every vehicle, every model year.
Jaguar-Land Rover has invested considerable effort into improving its Pivi Pro infotainment software, and the results are impressive. The new Range Rover runs the software on a 13.1-inch touchscreen with a 13.7-inch configurable digital gauge cluster. The new screen provides haptic feedback when it registers a touch input, which Land Rover says will reduce distraction and make the system more intuitive.
Voice controls allow input for music, phone, navigation, and more, and the system can receive over-the-air updates to add new features and refine existing functionality over time. The SUV is available with a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.4-inch HD touchscreens.
Other features include:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Amazon Alexa
- Qi wireless charging
- SiriusXM satellite radio
The list of Range Rover competitors reads like a who’s who of high-end luxury SUVs and includes the BMW X5, Lexus GX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90.
