An automaker well-known for championing all-wheel drive on cars or car-like vehicles before the trend surged industry-wide, Subaru adopted a more conventional compact crossover shape for a new 2013 model. Originally launched as the XV Crosstrek, Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and Boxer engine technology were packaged in a rugged yet sporty vehicle. 8.7 inches of ground clearance and up to 51.9 cubic feet of interior cargo space gave the Subaru XV Crosstrek some impressive versatility at a reasonable price. A 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine could be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission with manual shift mode. Added sound reduction engineering was built into the 2014 model year XV Crosstrek followed by more improvements for 2015. Along with a standard rear view camera, Subaru's Eyesight driver assist and Starlink multimedia system were made available on the crossover. Starting in 2016, the ‘XV' lettering has been erased from the crossover vehicle leaving it to be called the Subaru Crosstrek.
