A substantially enhanced version of the 456 2+2 passenger sports car that first appeared in 1992, the Ferrari 456M arrived in 1999. The Ferrari 456M featured a simplified exterior design compared to the original 456 that resulted in improved airflow. This Ferrari grand tourer was an exquisite balance of high-performance and luxury. Under the long hood of the 456M was the 5.5-liter V-12 engine.

Generating 442 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the powerplant was governed by a Bosch engine management technology and featured dry sump lubrication. The Ferrari 456Ms engine was offered with the choice of two transmissions. The GT version of the 456M was equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox while a four-speed automatic came with the GTA. 0 to 62-mile per hour acceleration for the Ferrari 456M GT was rated at 5.2 seconds. Acceleration times for the version of the 456M equipped with an automatic transmission was slightly slower measured at 5.5 seconds. Four-wheel disc brakes behind the Ferrari 456Ms 17-inch aluminum wheels and a rear self-leveling suspension system allowed the 2+2 passenger sports car to achieve steady handling. Able to fitted four occupants, Connolly leather covered the seating inside the Ferrari 456M. Dual front airbags, power windows and a Becker stereo system was included standard.

Introduced in 2002, the Carrozzeria Scaglietti program allowed customers to custom order the Ferrari 456M with unique touches. Representing the final time on a Ferrari road car to be equipped with concealed pop-up headlights, the 456M was replaced by the 612 Scaglietti in 2004.
