Chevy carried the 2007 Malibu forward into 2008 and renamed the model the Malibu Classic while they finalized the launch for the all-new 2008 Malibu. As one would expect, the Malibu Classic is nearly identical to last year's model, with the notable absence of the Malibu Maxx body style. Also, traction control and ABS are now standard on all models, and rear drum brakes have been upgraded to discs across the board. The LTZ and SS trims have been discontinued, leaving only the LT sedan.

A carryover of the 2007 model year mid-sized sedan, the Chevrolet Malibu Classic was offered in LS and LT trim. Standard power for the Chevrolet Malibu Classic LS came from a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine producing 144 horsepower. Optional with the LS but standard with the LT model was a 219-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Fuel economy with the four-cylinder Malibu Classic was rated at 21 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. The six-cylinder model’s fuel mileage was less than the four-cylinder model but still averaged 23 miles per gallon through combined city and highway driving. Both engines offered on the 2008 Malibu were paired with a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
Standard equipment included on the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Classic LS included 15-inch wheels, air conditioning, keyless entry, cruise control, power windows and an AM/FM stereo system with CD player. The Malibu Classic LT model received enlarged 16-inch wheels and included standard steering wheel mounted audio controls. All models of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Classic included safety equipment such as four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake force distribution, traction control as well as frontal and head airbags. There were six exterior colors available on the 2008 Malibu Classic comprised of five metallic colors and White. The Chevrolet Malibu Classic was only available as a fleet car during the 2008 model year.
