Can-Am is a brand of motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs owned by Bombardier Recreational Products. The brand initially started by producing motorcycles strictly, but in 1971, Bombardier commissioned a line of motocross bikes that utilized the same rotary engine. Early models were a success, and the Can-Am team placed second for the national championship in 1976. The name “Can-Am” derives from the Canadian-American team that jointly designed the original bike. 

Despite the success of the Can-Am bikes, Bombardier was struggling financially, and during the 1980s they restructured the company, which included abandoning the motorcycle industry. The Can-Am brand was sold off in 1983, and the brand went out of business entirely in 1987. However, Bombardier would end up buying back the rights to the Can-Am name. In 2006, they launched a new line of motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs under the same classic label.

Today, we will be looking specifically at Can-Am’s line of UTVs and utility-style ATVs. Here is an overview of what they have to offer and the best place to find each model.

Can-Am UTV Buyer’s Guide

Since 2007, Can-Am has released seven models of ATV and UTVs. Two of these models, the 500cc Quest, and the 200cc Rally, are no longer in production. 

The base model Traxter is an enclosed side-by-side, available with either a 500cc engine or a beefier 650cc engine. It is built for three passengers, and it remains the flagship of today’s Can-Am line.

The Outlander is Can-Am’s basic utility-style ATV. It is made for comfort, and it is available with engine sizes ranging from 400cc to 1,000cc. All of these are V-Twins, which produce a smooth riding experience. There is also a modified Outlander X-MR, which is specifically engineered for mudding.

The Renegade is a sportier version of a utility ATV, more closely resembling a traditional ATV than any of Can-Am’s other offerings. Engine sizes range from 500cc to 1,000cc V-twins, with multiple alternate options available. These include the Renegade X-XC with a modified trim for cross-country racing and the XT-P with its front sway bar.

The Commander is a true UTV or side-by-side, available with both 800cc and 1,000cc V-twin engines. The base model is a straightforward utility vehicle for hauling gear. However, there are several other trim packages with extra options. In addition to a winch and other features, you can also purchase the Commander with a radio and built-in GPS.

The Maverick is designed primarily for speed, with a powerful 1,000cc engine that provides a whopping 101 horsepower. It is also available with an upgraded turbocharged 121 horsepower motor, so for a three-person UTV, it offers a ton of power.

The DS is Can-Am’s entry-level model, and it looks a lot like a miniature version of the Outlander. It includes both 70cc and 90cc youth models, as well as larger 250cc and 450cc models. The company previously manufactured a 650cc option, but it has since been discontinued.

The Best Places To Buy A Can-Am UTV

The best place to buy a Can-Am UTV will largely depend on whether you are buying new or used. If you are buying new, you will have to go through a dealer, in which case you’ll want to make sure to get prices from several dealers whenever possible. The MSRP is simply a recommendation, and individual dealer prices may vary.

You can find used UTVs on several online marketplaces or in your local classified ads. If you are buying a used UTV, make sure to inspect the vehicle or have it inspected by a trusted mechanic before handing over any money.

The base model Can-Am Traxter is the original, enclosed UTV that put Can-Am on the map, and has an MSRP of $17,305. They are tough to find used, but they are often very affordable when available. Can-Am’s other legacy models, the Quest and Rally, are also incredibly difficult to find. You will likely need to keep an eye on independent auction houses if you are looking to pick one up on the open market. Also, make sure not to confuse the Rally with their Ryker Rally Edition, which is a three-wheeled motorcycle.


The bold, beefy Outlander is known for its practical design and large cargo panels. It’s built for comfort, with a passenger seat back and shielded hand grips. A new Outlander will cost you around $16,000, while used models are more affordable, ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 depending on the model year and options.


The Renegade is both bigger and taller than the Outlander, as it befits its larger, sportier engine. It also features a more stripped-down design, with fewer comfort features, although it retains the Outlander’s shielded hand grips. The base model goes for $14,517 brand-new, with significant savings on used models. Depending on various factors, they can be as little as $8,000 or as much as $18,000.


The more utilitarian model of Can-Am’s side-by-sides, the Commander, boasts a fully enclosed cab and a rear cargo rack and retains the lightweight look and feel for which the brand is well-known. A new Commander starts at $16,399, depending on your options. Used Commander side-by-sides can cost anywhere from $11,000 to $22,000.


The Maverick is the sportier of the two Can-Am side-by-sides, and it is designed specifically for that purpose. It has a lightweight, dune buggy-style design, with just enough of an enclosed cab to keep you safe in the event of a turnover. The standard version starts at $32,522, and the more lightweight Maverick Sport has a price tag of $29,311. Depending on the year, options, and condition, a used Can-Am Maverick will run you between $17,000 and $30,000.


Being that it is a smaller youth model UTV, the Can-Am DS is a bit easier on your wallet than its other offerings. The MSRP for a brand-new one is only $3,767, but prices can increase with extra add-ons. Used DS models range from $2,300 to $4,000.
