The XC90 carries over into 2026 and adds two new trims to the family, a new 6-seater and a 7-seater Ultra Dark theme trims. Rear seats also become standard as well as power adjustable side support for the front seats, a new slippery road alert and hazard light alert, new wiper blade system with integrated washers, and a new Aurora silver exterior paint. The XC90 was refreshed halfway through the year and retains those additions for 2026.

The XC90 carries over with minimal changes while the navigation system is now standard across the XC90 lineup for 2022.

The Volvo XC90 receives a mild facelift for this year with a new grille, some new wheel designs and a couple of new exterior colors. Inside, a new wool blended optional upholstery is available. In addition a 6-seat option is available for T6 and T8 Momentum models, while the optional digital driver's display now includes a road sign identification function as standard.

The Volvo XC90 receives minor updates and some shuffling of features across its trim levels heading into 2019. The biggest deviation being the new standard seating configuration as all XC90's are now fitted with three rows of seats. The exclusion to the rule being the 4-passenger T8 excellence XC90. An upgraded Harman Kardon audio system is now available as well as XC90's Oncoming Mitigation by Braking which slows the vehicle's speed to mitigate the force of an unavoidable collision.

The Volvo XC90 remains essentially unchanged for 2018. The biggest difference is to the equipment lineup that comes with the vehicle. New standard features for 2018 include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with adaptive cruise control, a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

Following a full redesign in 2016, the Volvo XC90 hits 2017 with few changes. For starters, the SUV will benefit from and update to its Pilot Assist II driver assistance technologies, allowing the XC90 to steer and brake autonomously at speeds up to 80 mph. Run-off road mitigation and large animal detection have also been added to the XC90's City Safety software. Also, a new 4-seater luxury trim, the XC90 Excellence, has been added to the range. It comes with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and puts a premium on rear seat comfort, with heated and cooled massaging seats, small tables, and a refrigerator. It is priced at about $105,000.

The Volvo XC90 gets a full redesign for 2016, with fresh, new exterior styling, a new interior and a brand new engine. The outgoing XC90 had been on sale for a long time when it finally ceased production in 2014 and Volvo wanted to take a full year off to figure out how to make its replacement as competitive as possible. The result is a thoroughly modern SUV that borrows very little from its predecessor, while still remaining unmistakably a Volvo.

The XC90 is essentially unaltered for 2014, maintaining its competitive pricing and plentiful safety features that have made it successful amongst mid-sized luxury SUVs.

For 2013, the XC90 receives its first major update since its launch in 2002. The 2-tone look of previous XC90's is now a thing of the past-- Volvo instead went with a more monochromatic theme for 2013. The front fascia is updated with the addition of new daytime running lights while new 18-inch alloy wheels round out the more noticeable exterior changes. Inside, there's a new leather wrapped steering wheel, walnut overlays and improved interior lighting. The R-Design has also been updated with new 19-inch wheels and a black mesh grill.

For 2012, the Volvo XC90 loses its V8 engine option and reconfigured all of the trim levels. The lineup now includes Premier Plus and Platinum models in addition to the performance-oriented R-Design. The base XC90 loses its optional navigation. It is now standard on the Platinum trim.

For 2011, the Volvo XC90 sees no significant changes.

For 2010, the Volvo XC90 sees no significant changes, though the V8 R-Design trim package has been dropped. Heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and headlight washers are now standard on the V8 model. The 3.2 now features a standard moonroof and third-row seating.

For 2009 the Volvo XC90 benefits from the sporty R-design package that Volvo has been introducing across its vehicle range in Europe. The R-design brings a sportier suspension, double exhaust pipes, unique skid plates and R-design specific styling throughout.

The Volvo XC90 was substantially redesigned in 2007, so for 2008, changes are minimal. V8 models get a few minor exterior updates, including 18-inch wheels, which replace 17-inch wheels as standard.

Volvo changed the engine lineup in the XC90 for 2007. Instead of offering a version of the long-running turbo-charged 2.5L, a 3.2L inline-six that generates 235 horsepower is now standard. This engine is available with either front- or all-wheel drive, and it is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The same 4.4L V8 that first appeared on the 2004 XC90 continues to be optional with all-wheel drive. In addition, the XC90's exterior has been mildly reworked. An optional blind spot information system enhances the safety level of one of the safest SUVs on the road.
