Toyota's big Land Cruiser sport-utility vehicle has been completely redesigned for 2008, with a stronger V8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, a stronger frame, redesigned front suspension, a new Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, and Crawl Control, an electronic aid that helps make demanding off-road situations safer and smoother. With about two inches more length and an inch more width, the new Land Cruiser is about the same size as the model it replaces, with space for eight in three rows of seating. Following a redesign, the 1999 Land Cruiser was unchanged. For 2000, the Land Cruiser got an Active TRAC electronic four-wheel-drive system, illuminated entry, remote entry, powered sun roof, third-row A/C and leather upholstery as standard features. Updates to upper trim levels and optional packages marked the only changes for model years 2001-2002.
A five hp boost to engine power, a new five-speed automatic transmission, 17 premium alloy wheels, updated head and tail lamps, new bumpers, a revamped dashboard, audio controls that were steering-wheel-mounted and updated options rounded out the big changes for 2003. No changes were in store for 2004, with 18 aluminum wheels being made standard for 2005. In 2006, variable valve-timing technology upped the V8s horsepower by 40 to 275. Toyota also made a tire-pressure monitor system standard, and revamped the style on the head and tail lamps, with a new grille and updated interior styling.
For 2007, the engine would lose 10 hp, and front-seat side airbags and two-row side curtain airbags were added as standard features. A redesigned Land Cruiser was issued in 2008, offering more room, better handling, new upper trim levels, more options and enhanced safety features. Rear privacy glass marked the only update for 2009. The On-Star system was added as a standard feature in 2010, alongside Bluetooth/iPod/USB integration. Model years 2011-2012 would see no changes, with the Land Cruiser taking a hiatus for 2013. Itd return in 2014 relatively unchanged.
