For 2018, Smart has dropped the gasoline engine from the lineup and is now solely powered by an electric motor. The Smart Fortwo thus becomes one of the cheaper electric cars available in the U.S. with its futuristic drivetrain matching its futuristic styling.

For 2017 the smart fortwo gets a convertible body style called the Cabrio to compliment the existing coupe. They have also added the Smart Electric Drive that can be ordered as a Coupe or Cabrio. The Brabus sport package was added and all models with fog lights will now come with cornering lights as well. It's still a tiny, 2-seat, urban, city car that does its best work in crowded streets where parking is scarce. A new, more powerful turbocharged engine gives the fortwo a bit more oomph for those occasional trips onto the freeway, while a redesigned interior innovates and makes the most of the space that is available.

The Smart fortwo Electric Drive returns for 2013, in both coupe and cabriolet guise, though the diminutive EV features a thoroughly revamped powertrain. An all-electric magneto motor rated at 47 horsepower and 95 ft-lb of torque draws its juice from a 17.6-kW-hr lithium-ion battery, which is no longer sourced from Tesla. Smart claims that 74-hp bursts are capable for up to two minutes in "Kickdown Mode." The whole system is paired with a single-gear automatic. The car is EPA-rated at a combined 107 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). Smart has priced electric coupes at $25,000, while electric cabriolets will start at $28,000. Big federal tax incentives are available.
