Following a name change and a facelift in 2008, the Mercury Sable carries on for 2009 with virtually no changes.

The Mercury Sable, formerly called the Montego, gets a powerful, 3.5L Duratec 35 engine for 2008, along with a new six-speed automatic transmission. Altogether, the new powertrain gets a nearly ten-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the previous one. Compared to last year's Montego, the Sable gets a slightly different look, with a cleaner, more integrated front-end design with satin aluminum waterfall grille, combined with projector-beam headlamps, plus new chrome fog lamp surrounds and satin aluminum caps for the side mirrors. The taillamps are lit with LEDs and have white lenses with red stripes, while a chrome accent strip has been added in back. Also for 2008, more sound insulation has been used for a quieter interior, the suspension has been retuned for more travel and improved comfort, and the power-steering system has been recalibrated. Availability of the all-wheel drive system has been expanded to the base model. The feature list is largely carried over from the Montego; however the Sync voice-activated, hands-free communication and entertainment interface is a new option.

A revised hood and deck lid with new grille andupdated headlamps and taillights graced the 99 body year, with notable updatesalso made to the powertrain and safety features. The only additions for 2000were four new body colors and minor interior revisions. Trim updates and minorchanges were the only new additions for 2001. A standard 60/40-split rear seatwas offered in 2002, alongside other subtle updates to trim levels. Someshifting of trims and packages were all that was seen for 2003. Retired brieflyafter 2004, the Sable would not be introduced again until 2008. The all-newbody style was based upon the popular Montego, and offered a better engine, asmoother drive, a spacious and quiet cabin and new suspension, amongst hundredsof updates that were made to the complete overhaul of this car. It would passinto 2009 with only minor tweaks being made from the year previous.
