About S-Class
Often the premier showpiece of Mercedes-Benz's top performance and luxury comfort, the first time the company's largest sedan was referred to as the S-Class was in 1972. The first generation luxury sedan model gave the S-Class a reputation for powerful, modern appearance and also invested heavily in promoting safety. In 1978, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class line was one of the first luxury sedans in North American to incorporate the choice of turbocharged diesel engine propulsion. Through decades, the S-Class sedan continued to evolve with design and technology such as 4Matic all-wheel drive in the United States for 2003 and later high-tech pre-collision systems. The most recent redesign for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class was introduced for 2014. Two defining attributes of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class were the complete deployment of LED lighting and an available fragrance atomizer. Cemented as a luxury sedan, the S-Class has also been offered as a coupe. In 2015, the S-Class Coupe was reintroduced to the United States when it replaced the CL-Class. For 2016, the first plug-in hybrid S550e sedan as well as an ultra-luxury Mercedes-Maybach S600 was added to the S-Class line.
