Mazda CX-9 Model Years and History

The Sport trim was dropped for 2023 but the Mazda CX-9 otherwise carries over with minimal changes.

Mazda have subtly improved the CX-9 for the 2020 model year. The most obvious change is to the second row, which can now be optioned with heated captain's chairs which add a big dose of comfort for rear seat occupants. Mechanically, the CX-9 gets a few improvements to the engine for slightly better torque, while an off-road traction control system has also been introduced for this year. The 2020 CX-9 also represents a slightly better value when compared to last year's model as heated seats and mirrors now come standard on even the base Sport trim.

For 2019, Mazda has retuned the suspension to provide a more comfortable ride and improved soundproofing for a quieter ride. The Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trims now benefit from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added to the infotainment system. The Grand Touring trim features a new 7-inch gauge cluster, ventilated front seats and a surround view camera system.

The CX-9 rolls into 2018 with a few changes to the standard features including: Mazda's Smart City Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Mazda's G-Vectoring Control, a new electronic system that the company says improves steering and stability in turns. A new Sport package for the Sport trim level includes active safety features such as automatic high-beams, lane-keeping assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers and adaptive cruise control. This package also adds heated front seats with power adjustment for the driver. The mid-level Touring trim sees enhancements to its power front-seat adjustments and now includes a tilt function for the driver's seat and height and lumbar support adjustments for the front passenger. Grand Touring models now feature heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. Lastly, a new color joins the palette: Soul Red Crystal.

After a full redesign last year, the CX-9 returns for 2017 virtually unchanged, though the Touring trim now gets Mazda's Smart City Brake Support system as standard.

The Mazda CX-9 is completely redesigned for 2016. It benefits from Mazda's KODO "Soul of Motion" design philosophy with a muscular, athletic shape front to back. Underhood is an all-new turbocharged 2.5L engine making 250 horsepower. In front-wheel-drive versions, the CX-9 returns an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in combined city/highway use. Base price for the new CX-9 is $31,520.

For 2015, the Mazda CX-9 is mostly unchanged from last year. A new option package is available, dubbed the Recreation Accessory Package. It adds roof rails, cross bars, a cargo net and a stainless-steel rear bumper guard. New colors are also available for 2015.

For 2014, the Mazda CX-9 is mostly unchanged from last year. A new tech feature, rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard on the Touring and better models.

For 2013, the Mazda CX-9 has subtle external styling updates fore and aft using Mazda's "Kodo Soul of Motion" philosophy, which brings the SUV's sporty looks more in line with other models in the Mazda stable. Interior updates include some minor changes in materials, as well as the addition of upgraded audio systems, now with available Pandora Internet radio.

The Mazda CX-9 carries into 2010 with only a few feature changes, the most notable of which being Mazda's new trademark five-point grille and new more boldly designed fog lamp housings. Out back, the taillights have been slightly changed, and new wheels have been added. Inside features a new steering wheel, and the speedometer and tachometer receive new blue halo outlines while the dash has been given additional chrome accents. Dolphin Grey joins the list of exterior colors, and Real Time Traffic (RTT) is now available.

The Mazda CX-9 carries into 2009 with only a few feature changes and increased standard equipment. A trip computer is now standard on all models, a Bluetooth hands-free calling interface has been added to the Sport model's feature list and the Grand Touring model now has a standard auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink. Option packages get increased content as well. A new Power Sport Package now includes heated seats and heated outside mirrors, Sirius satellite radio has been added to both the Moonroof and Bose Audio Package and the Rear Seat Entertainment Package.

All new a year ago, the 2008 Mazda CX-9's engine moves from a 3.5L V6 to a 3.7L, and power increases accordingly from 263 to 273 horsepower. In addition, a blind spot monitoring system is now available on the Grand Touring trim.

Although the V6-powered Mazda CX-9 has styling that is similar to Mazda's smaller, sportier Mazda CX-7, it is an all-new-for-2007, seven-passenger, family-oriented crossover sport utility vehicle that is closely related mechanically to the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.
