Jeep Cherokee Model Years and History

The 2026 Cherokee, a brand-new offering from Jeep, shares its name with previous models produced by the company but begins a new vision of what the vehicle is. Now offered exclusively on a hybrid powertrain, it provides more than 500 miles of range on a full tank of gas. As the vehicle is considered a brand-new offering from Jeep, it also features a complete aesthetic redesign, featuring a boxier exterior, paying homage to earlier iterations of the vehicle while being equipped with expanded cargo space.

The Jeep Cherokee gets a few changes for 2023, the base Altitude trim was dropped, and the front-wheel drive model is no longer available.

Jeep has added a few changes to its Cherokee for 2022, the lineup now has five trims including the new X trim. The Limited trim gets standard all-wheel drive.

Jeep has added a few key changes to its Cherokee for 2021. Newly standard active safety features include automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. The base Latitude trim is now offered with heated exterior mirrors, and one-touch up/down front windows as standard. Trailhawk now adds a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and remote start. The new 80th Anniversary Edition based on the Latitude LUX trim offers special badging and stitching and features such as 19-inch wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

After a refresh last year, the Jeep Cherokee remains mostly unchanged for 2020. A couple new of new colors have been added, along with new 17-inch wheels for the Latitude trim, while the Limited model also gets a new set of optional 19-inch wheels. The biggest addition for 2020 is Alexa Skill Technology, which adds gives the infotainment system a bit of AI. Though the system is only available on Cherokees ordered with the larger 8.4 inch-display.

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee benefits from a re-styled front fascia that aligns it more with the Compass and Grand Cherokee visually but also includes the addition of a turbo-charged powerplant that brings excellent torque and fuel economy. Throw in an improved interior with more space and excellent use of materials and the Cherokee makes a statement in a hot crossover market.

The Jeep Cherokee remains essentially unchanged for 2018, though some of the trim levels have been reshuffled. Most notably the Latitude trim now occupies the lowest rung on the Jeep Cherokee ladder, while the Latitude Plus trim joins the lineup for this year.

For 2017, the Jeep Cherokee adds new high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps as standard equipment on all trims but Sport. Cherokee Latitude trims are available with a Jeep 75th Anniversary package.

The Jeep Cherokee remains mostly unchanged for 2016. The 8.4-inch touchscreen has now been enhanced with a friendlier, easier to use Uconnect operating system, while a couple of new exterior paint colors are also brand new for 2016.

The Jeep Cherokee was completely redesigned for 2014. Minor changes for 2015 include an engine stop/start function on V6 models, an optional low-speed front crash mitigation system, a safety package with blind spot monitor, rear cross path detection, and park assist and optional ventilated leather seats in the Trailhawk trim.

The Jeep Cherokee is all new for 2014. It features bold new styling that is immediately recognizable, yet bears little resemblance to its predecessor. Far more aerodynamic than the design it replaced, the new design helps the 2014 Cherokee achieve some eyebrow-raising mileage numbers. Behind that styling is a modern, powerful and efficient vehicle that features bountiful interior amenities and if properly equipped, off-road goodies.
