For 2021, the Sierra HD lineup is introduced with more wheel options, more exterior color choices and some new technology as standard on various trims.

The GMC Sierra HD has been completely redesigned for the 2020 model year. The new Sierra HD is bigger and more capable than the truck it replaces while also having a host of new technology to make living with and doing work with the truck, easier than ever before. At the same time, GMC crunched the numbers and found that more than half of their customers are opting for the upscale Denali edition of the Sierra HD. In accordance with those findings, they have made the new 2020 Sierra HD a more comfortable place to spend time in, with a well thought out interior, nicer materials and plenty of space for its occupants.

The 2019 GMC Sierra HD sees no significant changes for the new model year. However, for 2019, GMC discontinues the standard cab model, now only offering double cab and crew cab.

The GMC Sierra HD trucks gets a few minor updates for 2018. For starters a MyLink 7-inch touch-screen audio system with six speakers is offered as standard equipment. A rearview camera is also standard while the updated TPM system includes Tire Fill Alert to warn when you've reached proper tire inflation specifications.

The GMC Sierra HD trucks get a new engine for 2017: a revised 6.6L Turbo Diesel V8. Though it shares its size and configuration with the previous powerplant, the new engine makes more than 40 additional horses and well over 100 lb-ft more torque than the engine it replaces. Other new features for 2017 include new wheels for trucks equipped with the Terrain X HD package, new optional 20-inch wheels on the SLT trim and a couple of new colors: Dark Slate Metallic and Pepperdust Metallic.

Following a full redesign for 2015, the 2016 GMC Sierra HD features a host of small improvements. Among them are standard HID projector-beam headlights with LED running lights and a new hydraulically assisted power steering system. New options include wireless phone charging, IntelliLink with improved processing and either 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, and remote locking tailgate. A new fifth-wheel tow package is also available.

The Sierra is mostly unchanged for 2014. Axle ratios have changed slightly on gas models, and the 6.0L bi-fuel engine is available in the 2500 crew cab. A spray-on bedliner is also available.

The Sierra is mostly unchanged for 2013. The transmission now uses the powertrain to assist in braking on steep descents even in normal mode. New options include the availability of the 6.0L bi-fuel engine in the 2500 extended cab as well as several new colors across the model range.

The Sierra got a refresh in 2011, so not much changes for this year. A new Texas Edition package and a Premium package become available, both including 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, heated power-adjustable mirrors, heavy-duty trailering, a locking differential and dual-zone climate control. Denali models get standard heated and cooled front seats and heated steering wheel and a rearview camera standard.

For 2011, the Sierra HD line gets several updates, including greater towing and payload capacities as well as an all-new chassis. A new front bumper and grille have also been fitted. New 18- and 20-inch wheels are available on single rear wheel models. The base 6.0L V8 returns largely unchanged, while the 6.6L Duramax diesel now delivers 397 horsepower and an impressive 765 pound-feet of torque. 3500 models are rated to tow up to 20,000 pounds and have a payload capacity of just over 6,300 pounds--all while delivering an 11 percent increase in fuel efficiency. Both the 2500 and 3500 are still available in a multitude of configurations to suit every work or play application imaginable.

The GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD see only minor changes for 2010. Both trucks gets a slight power boost from the standard 6.0L V8, up to 360 horsepower over last years' 353 and a USB port has been added to the optional uplevel sound systems.

The GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD see few changes for 2009. An updated version of OnStar offers both turn-by-turn navigation and is Bluetooth compatible, and XM satellite radio now provides real-time traffic reports, known as NavTraffic. Electronic stability control is now standard on both 2- and 4-wheel drive extended and crew cab models with a standard cargo box. A rearview camera that does not require the navigation system is now also available. New colors include Carbon Black Metallic and Midnight Blue Metallic, while Dark Blue Metallic and Medium Brown Metallic have been discontinued.

The GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD, one year off of a complete redesign, get XM satellite radio standard for 2008, and Dark Crimson and Sonoma Red metallic paints replace Sport Red on the color palate. Universal home remote is now an option on the uplevel SLT models, rather than being standard equipment. Dual-rear wheel 3500HD models now ride on 17-inch wheels instead of 16-inchers.

The Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD are new for 2007. The professional grade truck has been given a complete makeover from frame to body parts, and the all-new interior works well as a mobile office as GMC continues to make great strides in truck livability. An 8.1L V8 is no longer available on the GM pickups.
