Eventually replacing the conventional three-quarter ton and one-ton GMC Sierra models, the HD truck line introduced a stronger GMT800 chassis, torsion bar design front suspension and powerful engines ideal for hauling. The 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD arrived in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab body styles. Standard engine power for the 2001 Sierra 2500HD was a gasoline-fueled 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 but a more powerful 8.1-liter Vortec V-8 was also offered. For optimum low-end torque, the GMC Sierra 2500HD came with an optional Duramax 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel powerplant. An all-new GMC Sierra 2500HD surfaced for the 2007 model year revealing a more aerodynamically-focused shape and a smarter 6.0-liter Vortec engine adding variable valve timing as well as Active Fuel Management. By 2011, the Sierra 2500HD with a revised Duramax turbocharged diesel engine provided 17,800 pounds of towing capacity using a fifth wheel hitch. A third generation GMC Sierra 2500HD was introduced in 2015 upgraded in strength and comfort. Standard StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control and a CornerStep rear bumper was integrated into the 2015 model year Sierra 2500HD.
