Since the 1970s, GMC extensively used the Sierra name to identify their full-sized pickup truck line. In 1987, the Sierra 2500 was standardized by GMC across the three-quarter truck line-up in association with the all-new GMT400 platform introduced for the 1988 model year. An improved chassis, anti-lock brakes and an independent front suspension on four-wheel drive models were accompanied by a standard 4.3-liter V-6 engine. V-8 powered and a turbocharged diesel engine was available with the Sierra 2500 from 1988 to 1998. In 1999, a new version of the Sierra 2500 appeared with a completely modernized look and a frame incorporating hydroformed fabrication. A 5.3-liter V-8 engine was utilized as the base powerplant but a 6.0-liter was also available. While the New Sierra 2500 was sold from 1999 to 2001, the previous generation GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck. The GMC Sierra 2500 was ultimately replaced after the 2004 model year by the professional grade 2500HD.
