BMW X6 M Model Years and History

The X6 returns for its third generation with the 2020 model. The X6 has always been about merging the space and utility of a crossover vehicle with the styling, handling and extroverted nature of a sports coupe. This newest generation marries those concepts better than ever before with bold new styling, powerful engines and the kind of performance one would expect from a much less practical vehicle. Option the X6 correctly though and it'll tow up to 7200 lbs while carrying two rows of occupants in absolute comfort.

The BMW X6 got redesigned in 2015, so it carries forward largely unchanged into the new model year. Some equipment got reshuffled-- the 50i gets 4-zone climate control as well as the Harman/Kardon stereo.

The BMW X6 has been redesigned for 2015, now entering its second generation. New exterior styling is sleek, sporty and aggressive, while the new interior is both more luxurious and more practical than the one it replaces. BMW have generally gone through great lengths to make the newest X6 easier to live with than past versions, with a 40:20:40 split folding rear seat and an available power rear liftgate. At the same time, the X6 is more luxurious than ever, the moonroof is now almost six inches longer than it was last year. For the first time in its life, the X6 is now offered in rear-wheel drive configuration, helping to keep its base price down.

After its minor refresh last year, the BMW X6 remains unchanged for 2014.

For 2013, the BMW X6 line sees only minor changes, including a freshened front fascia, new LED taillights, and optional adaptive LED headlights. Also new on the options list is a third-row bench seat, as well as updated leather choices in the M model.

For 2012, the BMW X6 line sees no major changes. Several enhancements have been made to the list of standard equipment, including standard auto-dimming mirrors, tinted glass, heated front seats and BMW Assist with Bluetooth. A newly optional rear middle seat allows seating for five.

For 2011, the 35i is outfitted with a new single-turbo, 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine is the same that is available for the BMW 335is, 740i and 740iL. All but the hybrid X6 now come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid powertrain utilizes a 7-speed automatic.

BMW's distinct 'Sports Activity Coupe' was introduced last year and enters its second year adding a new ActiveHybrid X6 model, a 2-mode gasoline-electric full hybrid that promises brisk acceleration yet dramatically reduced emissions and improved fuel economy.
