The biggest change to the X5 lineup in 2016 is the addition of the X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid model. The xDrive40e includes enough power for trips of up to 13 miles of electric-powered driving. Quick trips to the grocery store can thus be achieved without using any gas. Despite the eco-friendly nature of the xDrive40e, it is still claimed to hit 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, making it both quick as well as environmentally friendly.
SelectBrowse ListingsThe first plug-in hybrid sold in the United States under the BMW parent brand, the X5 xDrive40e introduces a high-tech powertrain to a popular luxury sport activity vehicle. Utilizing BMW's EfficientDynamics eDrive technology, the X5 xDrive40e features a powertrain combining a TwinPower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. A 9.0 kWh capacity lithium-ion battery added to the BMW x5 xDrive40e stores enough energy to allow the vehicle to travel up to 19 miles on a single charge without using the gasoline engine. Permanent all-wheel drive is standard on the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Almost identical to the pure fuel-burning examples of the BMW X5, the most notable feature to the X5 xDrive40e is a small door behind the driver's side front wheel for the electrical charging port. In addition to being an efficient vehicle, the X5 xDrive40e enjoys luxury accommodations and luggage space totaling 1,720 liters.
