The cargo van version of the 2002 Freightliner Sprinter introduced several featured considered unorthodox to the commercial van segment in United States at introduction such as the choice of a 64-inch or 73-inch roof height. A second generation version of the commercial van debuted for 2007 featuring an updated exterior appearance, expanded selection of lengths and available with a new 3.0-liter diesel engine incorporating BlueTEC SCR technology for cleaner emissions. A new 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine debuted as the base powerplant the Sprinter Cargo Van starting with the 2014 model year. Existing with only rear-wheel drive from 2002 to 2014, four-wheel drive was added to Freightliner Sprinter in 2015 becoming the only commercial van at the time to offer the system as a factory option. A more budget-friendly Sprinter Worker Cargo Van arrived in 2017 available at a price that is thousands less than the previous base model.
