The Mercury Montego is nearly identical mechanically to the Ford Five Hundred, sharing the same Volvo-derived platform. The sedan has one of the roomiest interiors in its class as well as the largest trunk space, with a cargo area that can be expanded thanks to folding rear seats and a folding front passenger seat. The Montego is also one of the safest; it has earned top five-star government crash-test ratings for front- and side-impact performance and is ranked "Good" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in frontal crash performance.
