Performance and safety are at the forefront with the 1998 BMW car line-up. BMW's main roadster receives an attractive performance boost with the brand's M division. The Z3 becomes the M Roadster in 1998 with the adoption of a 3.2-liter inline-six engine along with some distinguishing aerodynamics modifications and a quad exhaust system. Redesigned in 1997, the BMW 5 Series sedan is treated to a Sport Package for the 528i and 540i. Black exterior trim, 17-inch wheels and a performance-tuned suspension are included with the Sport Package on the 1998 5 Series models. BMW vehicles tout an enhanced level of safety for the 1998 model year. Side airbags is added as standard equipment on 3 Series models. Rear side airbags are a new-for-1998 option on the 5 Series and 7 Series sedans. The high-end 8 Series coupe is dropped from the BMW range for 1998.
