The 1998 Avalon would receive new head and tail lamps, a new front grille and trunk lid, new pre-tensioner seatbelts and new side-impact airbags. For the 1999 Avalon, Toyota added daytime running lights and powered mirrors to the Avalon. A roomier and more powerful car was built for the 2000 Avalon, boasting new interior and exterior styling, updated safety features, improved engine power and a smoother drive. The only update for 2001 was the addition of an emergency trunk release handle.
No major updates were in store for 2002. But in 2003, a new grille was added alongside updated tail lamps, bumpers and new dual-stage airbags and child safety seat anchor points. No changes were made for 2004, with a completely redesigned model being issued in 2005. Trim level updates marked the only changes for 2006-2007. Updated front fascias, new headlamps, a new remote entry system and a more efficient braking system were the only changes for 2008. For 2009, the Avalon got stability control and active whiplash reducing features added as standard equipment. Rear express up/down windows were the big update for 2010.
A new front and rear style, a brand new dashboard and tweaks to standard features were the only updates for 2011. There were not any updates for 2012, with Toyota releasing a completely redesigned Avalon for 2013. It would enter 2014 relatively unchanged.
