For 1998, the Neon by Plymouth got a new LEV rating that lowered the emission to acceptable levels. Updated ABS, an ignition key lock system and four new body colors also debuted. 1999 saw no changes, but the 2000 model year got next-gen side-impact airbags and optional leather seating. The 2001 Plymouth saw no major changes. Chrysler took over the car line in 2002, unveiling the new R/T and ARC models that offered a 2.0-liter 150-horsepower engine. Several new body colors emerged as did a new safety release trunk handle. In 2003, a new four-speed gear box was added and some shuffling amongst trim levels took place. A powerful SRT-4 debuted in 2004, offering a 215 horsepower engine, sport-tuned suspension and a restyling of the interior and exterior. The only changes for 2005 were tweaks being made to the various trim levels.
