How to Clean Rust Out of a Gas Tank

Motorcycle riders often experience rust inside the gas tank, especially if they ride an older or used model. Corrosion typically occurs when the bike is stored long-term in humid environments, but it can also happen when riders do not use a fuel stabilizer or leave the tank open for extended periods. 

Gradually, this moisture becomes trapped in the tank’s interior, allowing rust to form, which can clog the carburetor or fuel injectors. If it isn’t removed, excessive rust build-up can reduce the bike’s performance and lead to expensive repair jobs or tank replacement.

Fortunately, motorcycle riders can easily clean rust from inside the tank with a few simple tools. Learn how to clean rust out of a gas tank and proper maintenance and storage tips to prevent rust issues in the future.

Assess the Extent of the Rust

Before removing the rust, thoroughly inspect the tank to determine the severity of the corrosion. To assess a gas tank’s condition, uninstall it from the motorcycle and conduct a complete visual inspection of the following areas:

  • Check the exterior for damage. Look for deep dents, large cracks, or severe impacts. If the rust has led to or exacerbated any structural issues, the tank may need to be replaced. 
  • Inspect the tank for outside rust. Light rusting on the surface is relatively harmless and doesn’t generally signal damage to the interior. If the rust has spread under the paint, causing it to flake or peel off, the tank’s metal may have weakened.
  • Look inside the tank. After opening the gas tank cap, shine a flashlight inside and check the interior surfaces for rust. The thicker and the flakier the rust appears, the deeper and more difficult it is to remove.
  • Check a fuel sample. Drain a small amount of fuel from the tank into a clear container. Rust particles or debris in the fuel are signs that the interior of the tank is severely rusted or corroded.

Deciding Whether to De-Rust or Replace

After assessing the tank’s condition, consider whether replacing it with a new one makes more financial sense than attempting to treat it. Some important things to consider include:

  • Condition of the tank. The condition of the gas tank is the main factor in deciding if it needs replacing. If it’s too damaged, de-rusting alone might not be enough to fix it.
  • Rarity and desirability. Finding spare tanks can be difficult if the bike is a classic or rare make and model. Spare or aftermarket parts are more available if the motorcycle is newer or still available in dealerships.

Deciding whether to buy a replacement tank or spend the time de-rusting often comes down to the most cost-effective option. 

Five Steps to Clean Rust From a Gas Tank

If rust removal is a better option than a complete replacement, follow these steps to clean out the tank:

1. Drain the Tank

Remove the gas tank from the motorcycle, then drain the fuel using the manufacturer’s recommended method for the model. 

  • If the bike has a petcock, set it to OFF; otherwise, verify the ignition and fuel pump are fully switched off.
  • Locate the fuel line connecting the gas tank to the fuel injectors or the carburetor. On most models, the fuel line is made of rubber and secured with clamps.
  • Prepare a container under the lines to catch fuel.
  • Loosen the fuel line clamps with pliers, then pull it off.
  • On bikes equipped with a petcock, set it back to ON to let the fuel out of the tank. Otherwise, use a siphon pump to drain it.

If the fuel is old or rancid, dispose of it safely; otherwise, preserve it in a gas can or an appropriate fuel container. If the tank has cracks or small holes, seal them using rubber or vinyl vacuum caps.

2. Choose an Acid and Agitator

Most cleaning and de-rusting agents produce strong odors that cause nausea or headaches. So always perform this part of the cleaning process in an outdoor or well-ventilated area.

Chemical rust cleaning requires both an acid and an agitator. The acid loosens the rust, and the agitator helps dislodge any particles the acid hasn’t removed. 

  • Choose an acid. The safest acid to use at home is white vinegar (acetic acid). While it takes the longest to remove rust, it is inexpensive, non-toxic, widely available, and the least likely to damage the tank’s underlying metal.

    More potent solutions include phosphoric acid or muriatic acid diluted with water. The recommended water-to-acid ratio varies depending on the acid used and the desired rust removal strength. While they can remove rust more quickly, they require appropriate protective equipment due to the stronger fumes. They can damage the metal if left inside the tank for too long.
  • Choose an agitator. Steel BBs or small nuts and bolts are durable, inexpensive, and effective at scraping away loose rust. Some dedicated rust removal kits include specially shaped abrasive media as an agitator instead.

3. Fill the Tank with the Solution

Pour in the cleaning solution until roughly half of the fuel tank is full and shake it gently to make the cleaning solution reach all interior surfaces. Then, drop a few agitators into the fuel tank and shake it again. 

The shaking action and agitators hitting the tank’s inside will dislodge more rust, making it fall into the cleaning solution.

4. Let it Soak

Let the cleaning solution sit and soak. The stronger the acid, the shorter the soaking period. Vinegar may take several hours or even overnight to finish. Stronger solutions, such as phosphoric acid and muriatic acid, can complete the de-rusting process quicker, as short as 15 minutes for the fastest-acting solutions. 

5. Drain, Rinse, and Prep the Tank

Drain the cleaning solution from the tank by following the same steps as when draining fuel. If using strong acids, follow safe acid disposal practices appropriate for the substance. Tip the tank upside down and shake it out to retrieve the agitators.

Rinse the tank with a baking soda solution to neutralize any remaining acid residue and prevent damage to the metal inside. Drain the tank again, rinse it with clean water, then drain it again.

When the tank has been thoroughly cleaned, inspect the seals and replace them as needed. The gas tank is now ready to be reinstalled and refilled with gas.
