Everyone knows what a station wagon is, but defining a hatchback can be difficult. Some are obvious, like the Volkswagen Golf. Some are not, like the BMW 5 Series Gran Touring. Regardless of how you define them, such vehicles provide extra utility and, in the case of the models listed in this guide, an expectation of long-term reliability.

Based on data collected by J.D. Power during surveys of thousands of new- and used-vehicle owners in the annual Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and Initial Quality Study (IQS), predicted reliability Power Circle Ratings forecast the likelihood that a model will prove dependable in the future. Those models that are hatchbacks and wagons are listed on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order.

Do keep in mind, though, that the ratings shown reflect how the model measures up against other models in their specific market segment, and are not intended for cross-comparison between segments.

2016 Audi Allroad

Based on the Audi A4 Avant, a station wagon that is no longer sold in the U.S. market, the Audi Allroad is equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, standard all-wheel drive, and a raised suspension for extra ground clearance. Rugged styling cues give the A4 Allroad wagon extra appeal to American car buyers in love with crossover SUVs.

The 2016 Allroad receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2016 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

Giving the 5 Series lineup a more practical and utilitarian alternative to the 4-door sedan, the Gran Turismo is a 5-door hatchback that sits higher and offers more interior room. If you’re not interested in a BMW X5 or X6 but you need more utility than a 5 Series sedan can provide, the 5 Series GT is your new ride.

The 2016 5 Series Gran Turismo receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2016 Kia Forte 5-Door

As a member of the Kia Forte family, this 5-door hatchback variation delivers impressive dependability coupled with daily driver practicality. Offered with a choice between a standard or a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Forte 5-Door can be optioned with enough extras to make a comfortable and convenient commuter protected by one of the best warranties available from any car company.

The 2016 Forte 5-Door receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4.5 out of 5.

2016 Kia Soul

All the Kia Soul lacks is an optional all-wheel-drive system to earn full-fledged membership in the crossover tribe. As such, it falls into the Multi-Purpose Vehicle category, and is effectively a 5-door hatchback. It's even available in an all-electric version. Trading passenger space for cargo room, the Soul is larger and more robust than you might think, making it an affordable and dependable alternative to small, front-drive crossover vehicles.

The 2016 Soul receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4.5 out of 5.

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

As the last traditional luxury station wagon standing—at least until the 2018 Volvo V90 goes on sale—the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in mild E350 4Matic and spicy AMG 63 flavors. The latter model cuts acceleration time nearly in half, to 3.6 seconds, according to Mercedes, while costing almost twice as much.

The 2016 E-Class receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.
